Natural Fertility Treatments to Avoid Invasive Infertility Treatment and Get Pregnant

How Long Should I Take Vitex for Fertility?

by Hethir Rodriguez, B.S., M.H., C.M.T.

Hi Hethir, I have been taking vitex for 3 weeks now and I am on day 35 of my cycle, am I supposed to stop taking the vitex on a certain day so my period will start. I did hpt it was negative.

There are two schools of thought on how to take Vitex. Most herbalists say that you can take it every day for up to 18 months, unless you get pregnant. Some other sources say to take it for two weeks before ovulation than stop, just incase you are pregnant.

With my clients I usually suggest taking it all month long except while you are menstruating.

Vitex does not contain any hormones in it yet acts by balancing the hormonal system. I personally take it daily (luteal phase imbalance), when I find out that I am pregnant I will stop.

As for your cycle being 35 days, if it was not normally that long it may be a sign that the vitex is working to balance things out. Sometimes when the body is healing it will seem a little more out of whack for a very short time and than comes back into balance.

Vitex and progesterone can be taken at the same time (remember progesterone is take only after ovulation until menses or if you become pregnant at least for the first three months.)

You can learn more about vitex for fertility here.

I started out taking 800 mg of Vitex per day. Usually in the evening because it seemed to cause extreme fatigue. I was taking it to treat a practically absent menstral cycle and adult acne. After 3 or 4 months, I upped the dose to 1600 mg day and have noticed a reduction in the acne along my jaw line. I have also had a period every other month since upping the dosage. I use Vitex from the company Solaray, the bottle recommends that you take up to 6 caps/day = 2400 mg. My questions are: How long should I take this? I am going on month 6. Is it safe to take long term as a daily supplement? Am I taking too much? Are there any studies that show a positive correlation between taking Vitex and a reduction or clearing of adult acne? Thanks for your help!

2 Dalene April 6, 2009

Hi Sarah Elizabeth,

You can take Vitex long term but you should let your body rest during menstruation. It usually takes 3-6 months and sometimes beyond to achieve desired results. Herbs take consistency and patience. You should not go beyond 18 months of taking this herb. If your cycle is not regulated after long term use you may want to ask an herbalist if there is a better option for your personal fertility challenges.

Vitex and acne. In this study, a Chasteberry preparation was used in women with menstrual cycle abnormalities. Acne was either eliminated or improved during treatment.(6)

In another study, 117 women with four different types of acne were treated with a Chasteberry preparation for 1-2 years. Improvement was seen after 6 weeks and by 3 months, about 70% were free of acne. Some treatment relapses were observed after 3-6 weeks.(7)

I have been hearing that supplements like Milk Thisle, Flax, even Evening Primrose Oil, taken for a while can add estrogen to your system, throwing off the hormone balance, and that the key is to get the liver healthy and circulation, to filter the excess hormones that we create everyday.

Is this true?

I’m trying to get pregnant, but have some estrogen dominance, so I want to balance my hormones, but I feel like I can’t take anything longer than a few weeks, or it will just throw me off again.

I have tried Natural Bio-identicle progesterone cream, but without routine blood tests, it was difficult to get the correct dose and would throw my cycles out of whack after a few months…

I am going to start taking Vitex, but again I am a little concerned…

4 Dalene April 28, 2009

Hi Danielle,

It would be nice to know of your sources of this information. I have not heard of Milk Thistle nor Evening Primrose Oil increasing estrogen in the system. Milk Thistle is a wonderful liver tonic, it protects the liver’s metabolic function and helps to renew it’s cells, which aids clearing excess hormones, such as estrogen. Evening Primrose needs to be taken from the beginning of your cycle up until ovulation. There is some controversy over Flax, there are some studies saying it may increase estrogen in the body and others that say because it contains a good source of fiber it helps to remove excess estrogen. Until one study wins over another I can’t say which is the correct one. Use your best judgement. Too much of any one thing can be hard on the body over time. If you have been taking these for over a year you may want to give your body a break.

Vitex is an incredible hormone balancer, which adapts to women’s different needs. Vitex has been shown to normalize heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), relieve amenorrhea (absent menstrual cycle), and decrease polymenorrhea (too frequent periods). Vitex needs to be taken for 3-6 months or longer to be effective. This herb is taken everday except while on your period.

Have you looked into taking DIM? DIM balances the hormones by breaking down estrogen and removing it from the body. Estrogen is a major culprit to many of the fertility issues women face today. Endometriosis, PCOS, and Ovarian Cysts, are all estrogen dominant conditions.

It is important to know when you are ovulating to use Progesterone Cream effectively. Have you thought about using home Ovulation Charting?

Best Wishes,

Dalene

HI, I am using Vitex (over 3 months) and now I am on cycle day 40 something, with no ovulation in site. Can I take Progon B for 10 days or so to trigger a period? I have PCOS, and Its not good to go to long without a period. Thanks for helping me!

6 Dalene May 22, 2009

Hi Amanda,

I am not familiar with this product. I recommend you ask your practitioner about this herbal supplement. We don’t sell this product and we prefer the ProGest Cream. I hope you can find some answers about this product, have you tried contacting the company? Here is a statement from the company that manufactures Progon B, “Bezwecken products should only be taken under the supervision of a licensed health care practitioner who is knowledgeable about Bezwecken products.”

All the Best,

Dalene

Hi Hethir,
I have been having irregular and long cycle since few months ago. I still haven’t ovulated since last AF. Is it alright to take vitex now before ovulation?
Thank u

10 hethir June 8, 2009

Vitex is traditionally used all month long except for during your period.

11 Natasha June 15, 2009

I took Vitex for ONLY 1 week (the week before my period) and I am now on CD 46 w/ no AF in sight! what is happening??? I know I am not pregnant

12 Sabrina June 16, 2009

Hi,
Just wondered, I take 1500 mg of Vitex all month long. I fear that if by not taking it during my AF, I’ll throw my body off in some way and have to start all over again. I’ve been taking it for about 12 weeks now, and feel fine. I plan on taking it for 18 months unless I become pregnant again, I miscarried after 10 1/2 weeks in late March, and have been taking Vitex ever since to balance my body back. (I actually used Vitex and some other herbs to become pregnant in the 1st place, then quit once I became pregnant) I’ve only had 1 period so far, if I’m not pregnant at this very moment, then another one should be rounding the corner any minute now.

13 Dalene June 16, 2009

Hi Natasha,

I am not sure what is happening with your body. It would be helpful to know why you began taking Vitex. Knowing your health history and fertility challenges help me to know how to answer your question properly.

Vitex is one of the most powerful herbs for women’s fertility and menstrual health. There are numerous studies and testimonials of Vitex and it’s effects on the body. One of the reasons Vitex is so effective and popular is because of its ability to balance hormones while not containing hormones itself. Vitex supports hormonal balance in the body by having an effect on the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axins (hormonal feedback loop), correcting the problem at the source.

Directions for use of Vitex:
Capsules: 1,000mg a day is the suggested amount to use. Take vitex capsules all month long except during menstruation.

Tincture: Take 10-15 drops of vitex extract, taken 2-3 times a day all month long except during menstruation.

However, unlike powerful hormone drugs, vitex works slowly to normalize the body. Maximum benefits are often achieved after 6-12 cycles with vitex.

All the Best,

Dalene

14 Chavon June 17, 2009

Hi! Can Vitex & Evening Primrose Oil be taken together for infertility???

15 Karla June 17, 2009

Vitex is said to take everyday exept when on your period…I have been bleeding for the past 3 months and recently started blood clots. I have gotten ultrasounds to check for endometrosis, uterine fibroids, cyst,….ect. I have nothing acording to different doctors, they all say it can me a hormone inbalance (I am 30 yrs old). My doctor gave me progesterone pill to help me stop bleeding but as soon as I stop I will start bleeding non stop. Then after a few months I wont have a period for 4 months then bleed again for 3months straight, I want to control my hormones will Vitex be a good thing to take. Also I was told my endometrium lining was a little thick so not to take estrogen because it causes the lining to grow even more. One doctor said this was because I was on Birth Control so long…..so Am I on the right treatment? Can I take Vitex since I’m still bleeding?

16 Jasmin June 28, 2009

Hello!
This is my first time writing and its all new to me so I have a few questions. My hubby and I have been ttc for about a few months now with no luck. I haven’t EVER been regular- my periods are usually a surprise when the come and they usually come every 3-4 months. Just recently my period was over Easter and then again on May 23rd for about 6 days and its the end of June and nothing yet so Im guessing it will be another few months. It took all of the women in my family a few years to conceive and I would rather not wait that long if I can help it so I’m going to be very pro-active. I have been taking a prenatal vitamin for several months now (also will be starting evening primrose oil) and after reading about Vitex I think I will start this as well. My main concern is that I DONT know when I ovulate and I havent started to track (yet)– SO– is it still ok to take Vitex?? I know I should stop it when my period starts then start it once its over. If you have any other suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. Anything I should be doing or not going?
Thank you!! :-)

17 Dalene June 29, 2009

Hi Jasmine,

I am so happy to hear that you are taking control of your fertility by choosing natural therapies! Vitex actually promotes and regulates ovulation. So over time (it is best to use this herbs for 6-12 cycle, up to 18) your period and ovulation should regulate, thus helping you to track when you ovulate.

It sounds like you are on the right track. Have you thought about a Natural Fertility Diet? This diet will help you to learn what foods help to boost your fertility and which foods may be harmful to fertility.

Best Wishes,

18 Julie July 5, 2009

Hi,
I have been taking Vitex since January, mostly in the liquid form. I’m taking it because we are ttc and after charting for over a year, I’ve noticed my luteal phase is shorter than normal (around 9 days). There have been a few 10-12 day luteal phases in the past 6 months with taking the vitex, but the past 2 months have been 8 days and I’m a little concerned this isn’t working. I also had a ovulation on day 40 about 3 months ago. Is there something else that would be beneficial for me? Should I continue to take vitex? Perhaps Vitex and progesterone together?I have been to my doctor and they don’t seem to interested in looking at my chart and they just prescribed me Clomid (which I read can thin the lining of the uterus) which I am not 100% sure I want to take at this point. Thanks – any help would be appreciated! I just want to know what to do.

19 Dalene July 8, 2009

Hi Julie,

It is hard for me to answer your question without knowing more about your health history. You say you were taking the Vitex because you are trying to concieve. Was your cycle irregular? Are you taking it for any other reasons? Are you taking it everyday except while on your period? What kind of dosage are you taking? I can’t say whether you should take Progesterone Cream without knowing if you are progesterone defficient. Why does your doctor want you to take Clomid? Are you ovulating?

Best Wishes,

Dalene

20 Julie July 8, 2009

Dalene,
Yes I started taking vitex because as we were ttc, I noticed the short luteal phase and read that vitex was a good option for that. My cycle can be very irregular – from ovulating on day 19 to day 40 with luteal phases from 8-12 days (average of 9). I was hoping to balance out my cycle with vitex. I am taking it everyday day except during my period and I take about 2 squirtfuls (in the drop form, I fill up the dropper twice) every morning. I saw my doctor about not concieving after a year and they did the hormone testing and everything came back fine (thyroid and prolactin). I tried expressed to them that my luteal phase was probably the problem and she gave me clomid. There wasn’t really any discussion and no chance for me to actually show or tell her what I think is happening with my body (I think I would know better than the doctor) and no time was spent sitting down looking at my situation. I’m not comfortable taking clomid at this time and would like to try a more natural route. I believe I am ovulating. I have a distinct temperature rise on my charts every cycle and a period every cycle.
I hope this is enough information. I appreciate you taking the time to help me!
Thanks again,
Julie

21 Katie July 10, 2009

Hiya,
I have started taking Vitex because my cycles have been getting longer and longer every month, i did not think i was ovulating until last month, i had been taking the vitex all month long and ovulated on day 52, i could not believe it that i got my period 4 days later, this has really worried me, what should i do this month?

22 Dalene July 10, 2009

Hi Julie,

I think taking the Vitex, one dropperful 3x’s a day would be best. I noticed at the Fertility Shop the recommendation is a bit confusing and I am working to get that cleared up.

Having a doctor that is not concerned with what you have to say and is willing to perscribe strong fertility meds. to you without having much of a disscussion is worrysome to me. I think it is extremely important to have a clear line of communication with your doctor. It is your right to always seek a second opinion or find a doctor that is a better fit. Have you considered working with an herbalist in your area? Finding someone who could work closely with you and that will listen to you and work with your thoughts on your body would be a great.

I am not sure why your periods are beginning to become more irregular while taking the Vitex, everyone is different, if this continues you may want to consider discontinuing use, but I think taking it 3 times a day would be the first thing to try. How long have you been taking it? I can’t see our previous message, so I don’t remember, sorry.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

23 Dalene July 10, 2009

Hi Katie,

Were you taking the Vitex even while on your period? How did you know you ovulated on day 52 and then began your period 4 days later? Are you sure you ovulated at that time?

Directions for use
Capsules: 1,000mg a day is the suggested amount to use. Take vitex capsules all month long except during menstruation.

Tincture: Take 10-15 drops of vitex extract, taken 2-3 times a day all month long except during menstruation.

However, unlike powerful hormone drugs, VITEX WORKS SLOWLY to normalize the body. Maximum benefits are often achieved after 6-12 cycles with vitex. This herb can be taken for up to 18 months.

Because Vitex takes time to work, continuing on for more cycles would be best. It takes time to balance the hormones naturally.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

24 Julie July 10, 2009

Hi Dalene,

I have been taking Vitex since January, but most regularly since March/April as I wasn’t always consistent at first. It makes me wonder if I’m just getting all balanced out or if it just isn’t working. I think you are right, I need to find someone who will actually work with me.

Thanks for all your help!

25 Katie July 11, 2009

Thanks Dalene, I did not take the vitex whilst i was on my period. I got a positive opk to tell me when i was ovulating which i think was brought on by acupuncture. This month i am taking my BBT, i guess it just takes time, do you think i should be taking anything extra to help my leutal phase this month??

26 Ann July 13, 2009

Hi Dalene, Hethir,

I sent a message awhile ago about taking vitex for my long cycle. I started taking it all month except during menstruation. My cycle was shorten from 60 days to 39 days and this time 18 days! I didn’t have any pain at all last cycle, but this time I did, but bearable compared to the pain I usually get. Cystic acne has reduced alot. However, I was shocked to get AF after 18 days with abit of breast tenderness. I was expecting more clear signs of ovulation but I got AF instead. My temperature remained high before AF. If I really did ovulated, I probably did on CD 10 or 11. I didn’t take my temp that day, so there’s a piece of information missing.

I’m now on CD1 of new cycle. Should I change how I take Vitex? I’m taking about 600mg (a tablet) 1 or 2 times a day. Please help.

27 Dalene July 13, 2009

Hi Ann,

Be consistent about how much you are taking a day. Once or twice is not consistent. Taking it twice a day would be best. Capsules: 1,000mg a day is the suggested amount to use. You didn’t say how many cycles you have been taking Vitex for. For the first cycles it takes a while to normalize/regulate. Not every woman is going to have exact amounts of days each cycle. While 18 is a bit concerning, it sounds like your body is trying to regulate. I am glad to hear that it is working to help you. Remember Vitex is not going to eliminate PMS, it may reduce it.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

28 Dalene July 13, 2009

Hi Julie,

For the first consistent cycles using Vitex, it takes a while for the body to regulate the menstrual cycle. Each cycle may not be exactly the same amount of days apart. Hope that makes sense. This herb works slowly over time.

All the Best,

Dalene

29 Dalene July 13, 2009

Hi Stephanie,

I am sorry for your loss. It can be very scary when you don’t know what is going on with your body. Hang in there.

I think it is important for women to have a good realationship with their doctor and to have someone who will listen to their concerns. I am sorry your doctor didn’t have any answers for you and only a solution of birth control. Maybe you need to seek out a different doctor.

I am not a doctor, but it seems to me if you didn’t get a D&C there is a slight chance your uterus may have not passed all of the tissues from the pregnancy and could have cause the secondary bout of clotting and blood.

After pregnancy it can take some time for your hormones to regulate and for a new cycle to begin to go back to “normal”. You could wait another month to see if your period comes back or you could look into taking herbs like Vitex or Dong Quai to help your period regulate.

If you are concerned about your Ovarian Cyst we have a wonderful page on our site that can help you to understand why cysts form and what natural therapies help to dissolve, reduce and prevent them, along with balancing your hormones. Just click on this word: Ovarian Cysts

Hi Dalene,

I’ve been taking Vitex Blackmores brand since last 2 cycles. There’s 660mg vitex extract in a tablet.
I know that Vitex is doing something for me. It’s just that 18 is abit worrysome, as I don’t know what to expect this coming cycle.
When I didn’t have pain at all, I thought it was because of vitex. Maybe it was also because I ate lots of bananas and drank more chamomile before AF?

Thanks Dalene, I will try to be consistent taking it twice a day.

31 Dalene July 14, 2009

Hi Katie,

I think being consistent with the Vitex should be all for now. It does take time, be patient.

Warmly,

Dalene

32 Jennifer July 14, 2009

I have been thinking about starting Vitex, because I do not have a monthly period. And I have PCOS. My husband and I have been trying to have a child for six years will this help?

33 Dalene July 16, 2009

Hi Jennifer,

Vitex is a great choice for women who want to bring their periods back naturally. In your case this should be combined with a PCOS Diet. Learning how to balance your carbohydrate and protein intake is essential in getting PCOS under control. If you can maintain good eating habits eating a PCOS Diet, the natural therapies we suggest learning about will work more efficiently and will not have to fight against the insulin yo-yo that women with PCOS experience. I highly recommend reading over the PCOS Diet page, this will give you a great guide as to how you can reduce the effects of PCOS, including how to use Vitex in your PCOS regimine.

34 Judy July 17, 2009

Hi,
I have short luteal phase problem only. I took vitex not knowing that it could bring on ovulation earlier – I ovulated 2 days early and that is a problem for me. What is the recommended dosage and when can I take it during the cycle so that it only lengthens the luteal phase, but does NOT bring on ovulation early?
Also, what is a good herb/product for increasing EWCM?

Thank you.

35 Dalene July 17, 2009

Hi Judy,

We recommend taking 1000mg of Vitex daily, except during your period.

Vitex works slowly over many cycles, we recommend at the least to use it for 6-12 cycles and up to 18. During the first cycles your body is working to normalize ovulation, which may not be exactly the time you think you should ovulate. Be patient and allow your body to work on balancing back out.

Could you please let me know in word what EWCM is. Do you mean Cervical Mucous? Thanks.

All the Best,

Dalene

36 Judy July 17, 2009

Hi Dalene,
Yes – I mean increasing the egg white cervical mucous (I.e. fertile mucous).

Thanks for responding.

37 Dalene July 20, 2009

Hi Judy,

Thanks for clearing that up. Drinking Green Tea, Evening Primrose Oil, Water based lubricant, L-Arginine and drinking plenty of water may help to increase Cervical Mucous.

38 karis July 21, 2009

Hello,

After reading your website, I went ahead and bought Vitex, Dong Quai, Maca, Bee Pollen Complex, Yarrow, and Parsley.
What would your recommendations be on doses, and are these all compatible with eachother?
The main reason I am starting these is because of Amenhorrea (lack of menstration), it will be a year in September, since I last had a period. My body is very unbalanced hormonally. I am hoping to regulate my period and become pregnant ( I have had 2 successful pregnancies (2 daughters, ages 6 and 3), and possibly had a miscarriage last september. I had a very long period that lasted about 3.5 weeks. My OBGYN perscribed birthcontrol. I stayed on it to stop the bleeding, then one more month after that to “hopefully” regulate my period…after I stopped taking it, which was October of ’08. I have not had another period since.
Ok, that’s the jist of my story.
Thanks,
Karis

hi,
i am trying to get pregnant and since i have stopped the pill i havent had a period (about 7wks)and am unsure if i am ovulating, i have taken a hpt but negative, i have also read that it is normal to have a long delay before you get a period after being on the pill. i am thinking of taking vitex…will it increase ovulation and pregnancy? i would be grateful for your advice, thankyou
katie

40 Dalene July 21, 2009

Hi Karis,

Could you please tell me in which form you purchased these herbs, tinture, loose leaf, capsules, ect? Thanks.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

41 Dalene July 21, 2009

Hi Katie,

Yes, Vitex may be a good option for you. Vitex regulates and normalizes ovulation. This herb takes time to be effective, 6-12 months and may be used for up to 18 months. By regulating ovulation you will be increasing your chances for conception.

Whenever someone is coming off of Birth Control we recommend doing a Fertility Cleanse. Fertility Cleansing helps to rid the liver of excess synthetic hormone build up from the birth control.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

42 katie July 21, 2009

hi, thanks for the advice. how often would i need to take it and how much? Also would i stop if i became pregnant?
thanks again

43 Dalene July 23, 2009

Hi Katie,

How to use Vitex…

Directions for use
Capsules: 1,000mg a day is the suggested amount to use. Take vitex capsules all month long except during menstruation.

Tincture: Take 10-15 drops of vitex extract, taken 2-3 times a day all month long except during menstruation.

However, unlike powerful hormone drugs, vitex works slowly to normalize the body. Maximum benefits are often achieved after 6-12 cycles with vitex.

Discontinue use if you become pregnant.

All the Best,

Dalene

44 Kim Halstead July 23, 2009

Just wondering why not take vitex during your period?

45 Dalene July 24, 2009

Hi Kim,

Vitex increases luteinizing hormone production while mildly inhibiting the release of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). This indirectly boosts progesterone production, which is needed for a healthy cycle. Because it helps your body to do this and we need Progesterone to begin to wane to help signal menstruation, continuing Vitex during a phase when hormones are supposed to be less active may throw your cycle off. When you are bleeding during your period this should be a time of rest, a time to let your body cleanse itself naturally and prepare for the next cycle. Vitex is an amazing herb that helps your cycle and ovulation to normalize.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

46 Kim Halstead July 24, 2009

I honestly did not know that. I wondered why you shouldn’t take it during your period though when I saw the response to several questions about vitex. Also I think someone may have asked this as well but can you take evening primrose oil and vitex together?
Thanks
Kim Halstead

47 Dalene July 27, 2009

Hi Kim,

Yes you can take Vitex and Evening Primrose Oil at the same time. The guideline below is for the Evening Primrose Oil we sell at our Fertility Shop.

Guidelines for taking Evening Primrose Oil: Take 1 to 4 capsules daily

Each capsule contains 1350mg of Evening Primrose Oil

Take Evening Primrose Oil during the first part of your cycle up to ovulation.

Warmly,

Dalene

48 Christina July 29, 2009

First I’d like to say THANK YOU for all the info above – so nice that you have taken the time to help us!

A little background on my situation:
I was never really regular in my teens, so around 18 I went on bc for approx 2 years, dr. said it would make me regular. The bc did work, but I hated the way it made me feel so I went off it and I didn’t get a period for several years. Then I went back on it for a couple more years and was getting my period. I stopped in 2004 for the same reasons before and I haven’t gotten my period since. I have always felt as if my body went thru a cycle (ie: feeling tired, breast tenderness, moody, even some cramping) but never a period.

I’m 29 and recently married my husband and want to have a baby so I started taking Vitex June 15th. The product is from Solaray Vitex Chaste Berry Extract 225mg has .5% Agnuside. The bottle says to take 2 a day. I‘ve been taking 1 in the am and 1 in the afternoon. I have also started taking my BBT within the last few weeks.

Not sure if this is helpful but here are some other supplements that I continue to take regularly: Acidophilus, D-Mannose w/ Cranberry extract, Omeaga-3, B-Complex, Women’s Multi, Calcium and Magnesium.

Any suggestions or thoughts would be greatly appreciated to help me get regular and conceive!

THANK YOU!

49 Dalene July 30, 2009

Hi Christina,

Sounds like you are on the right path. It is hard to be patient when you are ready to conceive, but Vitex takes time to be effective, 6-12 cycles and up to 18. Also, we recommend taking 1000mg of Vitex a day, sounds like you are only taking 500mg a day. Correct me if I am wrong.

Before adding any other supplements I would wait and see if the Vitex works for you. If after 3-6 months you have no change, you may want to look into herbs such as Dong Quai and Maca in addition to Vitex.

Whenever a woman has come off of birth control I always suggest a Fertility Cleanse. This helps to rid your liver of excess hormones that the liver has to filter out from taking the synthetic hormones contained in birth control. Not having a period for a long time also creates a stagnant condition in the reproductive system, the Fertility Cleanse helps to cleanse the uterus as well. To learn more click here: Fertility Cleanse Kit

All the Best,

Dalene

Hi there,
Just a few questions…
I have a similar story. I have never gotten my period on my own… it’s only been with the help of BC. I started taking BC when I was 17… I got off of it of January this year. I am now 22. I still haven’t gotten a period. I was told that I may have PCOS and my doctor put me on Metformin right away. I decided it wasn’t worth the nausea and got off of the Met after only being on it a month. I am now taking Vitex hoping that it will be a more natural route for me. I take 2 a day for now and will switch to taking 3 a day (1,000 mg).
Should I try this out for a while before I go to an herbalist? Is it likely that Vitex will help someone like me who doesn’t know when I ovulate or when I will have a period?

I feel a little hopeless. My husband and I are wanting to try for children as soon as possible but I’m hoping this natural way works so I don’t have to do anything that may have long term effects on my body.

Thanks!
Laura

Hi Laura,

There are two suggestions, first yes, go see an herbalist to get some help. Every person is so different it helps to have someone working with you. The next suggestion would be to look int the Fertility Cleanse, it has helped many women in your exact situation. After using so many hormones to regulate your system, a nice cleanse can make a world of difference. Also look into the herb Dong Quai as it helps to stimulate the circulation to the reproductive system helping to get things moving and a period started. Please stay in touch and let us know how you are doing.

I’ve been taking vitex for a few months now.. When i started taking it, i took it midcyle and didnt get a period for nearly 2 months. I went back to the shop where i brought it and the girl told me to stop taking it and let my period come naturally which i did. She told me to take it on my 1st day of my cylce which again i have done and now haven’t had a period for 6 weeks. I have stopped taking it and waiting for my period to come.. i’m not sure whether to start it again when i get my period or just give it a total miss.. The girl from the shop told me that it usually takes a while for the body to adjust and to give it another try. But i’m feeling confused and not sure what to do. I need some advice

I am 48 years old and just came off the bc pill after being on it for 22 years. My (new) husband and I are taking a slew of vitamin in preparation to getting pregnant. Each day I am taking 3200 mcg folic acid (since I am at higher risk for birth defects), 1020 mcg B-12, 1000 mg Omega-3, 50 mg Zinc, Iron, Calcium 1000 +D3, this also includes a prenatal vitamin. Next week I plan to add Vitex as well. Last summer I went off the birth control pill so my doc. could see if I was still ovulating and I had three really heavy periods in a row, 28 days between (perfect!!) Went back on the pill until recently and nothing so far! No cm or period – so I am hoping this “really” works as I don’t have much time to mess around! Wish me luck!!

54 Hethir Rodriguez August 10, 2009

Hi Sandra,

Are there any other factors that could have caused the period to stop? Are you under stress? How is your diet. Where there other herbs with the Vitex? Vitex usually does not stop a period, but brings one on, and it takes a while for it to work. You may want to look into our vitex or Pregnancy Prep which contains herbs that help to bring on the period and includes vitex.

55 sandra August 12, 2009

Hi hethir

thanks for getting back to me.. i’m not on any other medication or herbs.. My diet hasn’t changed at all & probably have been under a little stress but i have never had problems with my period. They have always been regular..

I’m waiting for my period to come and not sure now whether i should start vitex again or just discontinue it and go back on evening primose oil. I’m in 2 minds at the moment.

sandra

56 Hethir Rodriguez August 12, 2009

How are you taking your Evening Primrose Oil?

57 sandra August 12, 2009

i stopped taking the primose after i stated vitex. I was taking 2 tablets daily.

58 Yazzmyne August 21, 2009

Hi,

my prolactin levels are too high and haven’t been menstruating over a year, so I bought vitex agnus capsules (400 mg per capsule), I’m also on a raw food diet since the beginning of August. On the bottle it says, take 2 capsules twice daily, which would be 1600 mg per day. Would I have to start with a lower dose or not? I’m also in my second month of using maca root powder, but I’m not sure if that is helping to lower prolactin levels (I know it helps with fertility though).
The other thing I ordered is White Peony herb.

Not sure how all these things together will work out?

59 Hethir Rodriguez August 21, 2009

Yassmyne,
Those herbs will work together fine. For vitex the suggested dosage is 1,000mg. Taken all month long, but taking a break during your period. It takes time for these herbs to work (at least 3 months). Have you also made changes to a natural fertility diet? What is your age? A Fertility Cleanse may also be helpful to help cleanse the excess prolactin levels.

60 Tina August 24, 2009

I went off the bc pill June 1st and have had no period or cervical mucus since then. I began 1000mg of Vitex 11 days ago and just got my period — needless to say I am thrilled at 48 years old, I don’t have any time to waste! I was wondering, since I am at such a high risk for miscarriage due to my age, shouldn’t I continue Vitex thru my pregnancy until the first trimester? I understand it could get me thru the critical stage and really be beneficial.

61 Yazzmyne August 24, 2009

hi,
I’m on a raw food (vegan) diet now, haven’t read into the fertility diet yet.
I’m 29 and haven’t had my periods in over a year now, probably because of the high prolactin levels. I also bought tribulus, but I didn’t have my testosteron levels tested and read afterwards that tribulus may increase testosteron, so I’m not sure if I should take that as well..

62 Jen August 24, 2009

I was on depo provera for 12 years came off of it and went on micornor for a year. I have been off all bc since May of 08 but am not having period. I don’t think I am ovulating. I tried Vitex and had intermittent periods but started having them every 2 weeks so got scared and stopped taking it. I am trying to conceive but don’t want to do anything to make my situation worse. Can vitex help? is there any chance that it could make things worse. Before I went on depo provera I had very heavy periods that were very painful but they were very regular. Now I don’t have any. I only tried Vitex for 4 months.

63 Hethir Rodriguez August 24, 2009

Hi Jen,

How did you take the Vitex? All month long? Did you stop when your period started? How do you know if you are/not ovulating? Have you looked into doing a Fertility Cleanse? This is a great way to cleanse out excess hormones and chemicals left from the birth control. It could be a good place for you to start. You can learn more here: http://natural-fertility-info.com/prepare-for-conception

64 Hethir Rodriguez August 24, 2009

Hi Yazzmyne,

I would give the Maca and Vitex a chance to work. It takes at least 3 months. Also make sure you are eating hemp seeds/hemp milk in your raw diet as well as chia seeds, as the EFA’s are going to be really important for you.

65 Hethir Rodriguez August 24, 2009

Aviva Romm states in her wonderful book Botanical Medicine for Women’s Health…

In placebo controlled studies for teratogenicity and mutagenicity were conducted in rats, and even with the animals ere administered 74 times the dosage typically consumed by humans, no toxicity nor aberations in fetal development were seen. While Vitex can be used to help a miscarriage that is acute, it is best to use at least 3 months prior to conception and continued into the first trimester to maintain stable progesterone levels. The Botanical Safety Handbook provided no contraindications to use during pregnancy.

66 Jen August 24, 2009

I took it all month long with out stopping. I had started originally on a low dose 400mg appxo and then increased to 2 tabs a day. I had been monitoring my basal temps each morning but after I started have periods every 2 weeks I went back down to one pill. At that point my basal temps just levelled off and did not increase or decrease. I live in canada and don’t feel confident purchasing meds on line. Can you recommend something I can purchase here through a natural food store?

67 Sarah August 30, 2009

Hi –
My husband and I have been ttc for almost 15 years now – I’ve been through 6 miscarriages and two tubal pregnancies. I had the first 3 miscarriages without any fertility help – then the doctor put me on clomid and I had a tubal pregnancy (fallopian tube burst and they did surgery and removed my tube). We took a year off then went back on clomid to end up with another tubal that burst and lost my other tube. We went through 3 IVF’s – the first two I never got pregnant but the last one I did – but it ended up in a miscarry – a yolk sac too large. The last IVF I did acupuncture but no herbs.
We are trying again (IVF) for the our last efforts – we are both 36. My husband’s worked up is great – no problems. I have PCOS, diabetes type II, and my ovarian reserve is not looking good.
This time around I am going to try and do the herbs and acupuncture. Where should I start? We are planning on starting IVF in 6 months.
Thank you!!!

Hello Mish,

Have you looked into your diet? Diet plays a big roll in having a healthy menstrual cycle. You can learn more about the Natural Fertility Diet here: http://natural-fertility-info.com/the-nutrient-dense-fertility-diet/
Also we have a guide that shares different natural therapies that can help you get your period back: http://natural-fertility-info.com/how-to-get-your-period-back.html

71 mish September 10, 2009

Hi,
Yes I have a healthy diet..I have actually lost alot of weight because of this treatment and I have been trying to loost weight to bring back my period and prolactin level to normal. So please if you could help me. I would really appreciate it..

Thanks

Mish

72 Hethir Rodriguez September 10, 2009

Hi Mish,

Vitex can be used in combination with other herbs fine. You may also find this article helpful: http://natural-fertility-info.com/how-to-get-your-period-back.html

Suggested usage for vitex is 1,000mg a day, all month long except during your periods.

73 Christina September 10, 2009

Hi Dalene,

Thank you for answering some of my questions. I’ll definitely stay on the Vitex then.

You mentioned I should be taking 1000mg a day. What I’m taking now consists of one serving as 1 capsule (this is directly from the label):
200mg – Chasteberry Extract (Vitex agnus-cactus) (berry) std. to 0.5% Agnusides 1mg
300mg – Chasteberry (Vitex agnus-cactus) (berry)

I’m confused why it’s split into two types of Chasteberry? Also, does the above equal a full 500mg total? If so then I would take 2 a day? The bottle suggests 1 to 3 a day. 3 would 1500 mg. Can too much be counteractive?

I was going to buy the Vitex from your store but it has Don Quai in it, do you think your supplement would be better for me? I’ve read some of your other posts and you talk a lot about the quality of the herb.

Thanks again for all your help!

74 Hethir Rodriguez September 11, 2009

Hi Christina,

Yes the above would equal 500mg. 1,000mg a day is the general suggested daily usage.

Dong Quai is in our formula for two reasons.
1. To work as a catalyst to help the Vitex work better. (some herbs work best in synergy)
2. To help increase circulation to the reproductive system, which is helpful in the situations vitex is used for.

75 Mish September 11, 2009

Hi Dalene,

Thank you for answering my questions. One more thing..the capsules are 400mg and you mentioned the suggested dosage is 1000mg everyday…so should I take 2 capsules (800mg) or 3 capsules (1200mg)? at in the morning or during the day ??..I don’t want to have any reactions to the overdosage of more than 1000mg..

Thanks again for all your help =)

76 Hethir Rodriguez September 12, 2009

Hi Mish 800-1200mg would be fine.

77 Amanda September 15, 2009

Hi Hethir-

I having regular cycles every month the days maybe be a little off from time to time but usually are at least once a month. My fiance and I are trying to concieve a baby. I was just wondering if I start using Vitex if it will help us concieve a little faster, we have been trying for 3 months now! Thanks for your help!

78 Dalene September 15, 2009

Hi Amanda,

There are no gurantees to a speedy conception with any herb or product. Learning more about how Vitex works would be the best place to start. Vitex is so effective and popular is because of its ability to balance hormones while not containing hormones itself. Vitex supports hormonal balance in the body by having an effect on the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axins (hormonal feedback loop), correcting the problem at the source. Without knowing more about your situation I have no way of knowing if Vitex may be a good option for you.

You say that your menstrual cycle is pretty regular, have you thought of trying Fertility Charting? This may be a great tool to help you learn the best times to try and conceive!

Best Wishes,

Dalene

79 catherine September 16, 2009

Hi Ladies, What a woderfully informative website you have! I wish I would have found it sooner. I have been taking 400mg. of Vitex daily for 11 months straight. I have never stopped for my period. I have a 24 day cycle, I believe I ovulate day 11-12, leaving me with a 12 day luteal phase. My husband and I want to start trying to concieve in the spring. I realize now that I am getting close to the 18 months you suggest stopping taking the Vitex, my questions are, should I just stop all together at 18months? or should I taper off? is the dosage I have been taking too small an amount to be significant? should I stop taking it during my period and then gradually taper off? should I start taking a higher dosage and only stop during my period for these last few months? I am 37 years old and I’m extremely concerned about egg quality. At my annual Gyn. exam last week my dr. didn’t know anything about Vitex. I am so happy to have found your sight, any suggestions you may have would be very much appreciated. thanx in advance, Catherine

80 Dalene September 18, 2009

Hi Catherine,

After 18 months it is good to take a break for a week or two. You would stop using Vitex for 1-2 weeks to let your body rest and then you could begin to take it again. The suggested dosage for vitex is 900-1000mg, so the amount you have been taking is low. It is also good to stop for your period while you are on vitex. For some suggestions on egg quality you may want to check out this guide: http://natural-fertility-info.com/increase-egg-health . In addition eating a nutrient dense fertility diet is also important for egg health and a healthy cycle. You can learn more about this here: http://natural-fertility-info.com/the-nutrient-dense-fertility-diet/

What was your cycle like before you started using the Vitex?

Best Wishes,

Dalene

81 CS September 18, 2009

Hi. I have had fairly regular periods my whole life. Since we started trying to conceive they have been lengthening, and, according to my temperatures, my luteal phase has shortened. I gave it a few months to let it balance itself out (blamed it on stress) and when nothing improved I started 1,000 mg of vitex (taking it am and pm). I started it the day after I stopped my period. I got cramps as soon as I started taking it. They were not bad, but they were surprising. Now my temperature suggests I ovulated VERY early (CD8- three days after I started taking it). So, my questions is, can taking vitex increase one’s temperature (making it appear like you ovulated?) or is it possible that vitex worked this quickly for me, caused me to ovulate early, and that it will settle into an average length cycle next month? It would be a great success if I ovulated so early, but it is really hard to believe. Thanks.

82 catherine September 21, 2009

Thanks so much for your response Dalene. Before I started taking the Vitex I was on a fairly regular cycle of 26-28 days but I lost some weight quickly and had an annovulatory cycle last summer which completely freaked me out so that’s when I started taking the Vitex. I learned about it searching for information on-line but didn’t come across this website, I wish I had, it is wonderfully informative. Thanks again, Catherine

83 Dalene September 21, 2009

Hi CS,

In controlled studies Vitex has been shown to work slowly to normalize the body. Don’t expect your menstrual cycle and ovulation to regulate quickly, though it may be on its way. I have never heard of Vitex increasing body temperature, but you may have ovulated and that may be why your temp rose. Your cycle may not even be regular next month, Vitex usually takes 3-6 months to be effective and may be take for up to 18 months before your body will need a rest from taking it.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

84 Christina September 24, 2009

Hi. My endocrinologist is insistent on me doing a “Progesterone Challenge”. I know it’s a synthetic form of progesterone, so I’m concerned about that. But she says by the outcome (my understanding is, she is anticipating a withdrawal bleed) and the recent blood work, she’ll better be able to tell me why I’m not getting my period.
Can I still continue to the take Vitex while I’m taking the “Provera” – 10mg 1x day for 10 days?

Again, thank you so much for all your comments! I feel like your site has been a life line for me!

Christina

85 Dalene September 25, 2009

Hi Christina,

We don’t recommend taking fertility herbs while on fertility medications, there has not been enough research to show whether or not they may react adversley to one another.

Thanks for your support!

Dalene

86 Miranda September 28, 2009

Thank you so much for all the post on this site. I have actually learned a ton. I am going to go and buy vitex this evening and start using it to see if it will help regulate my periods as well. But i was wondering if there was a list somewhere to explain all the acronyms in these posts. I’ve figured some of them out but a lot are still a mystery. (ie. ttc, af, etc.)

Thanks.

87 Dalene September 28, 2009

Hi Miranda,

Those acronyms can be tricky. I don’t even know them all. I will talk to Hethir Rodriguez about posting a list on the site so that people new to the community can understand what everyone is talking about. I always try and recommend our community use full words so that we all are clear on what is being said.

Hello, ive been taking vitex from the beginning of my cycle this month and didnt realize that your not supposed to take it while on your period, i have taken it while on my period and have had an abnormaly long period, could this be why?

Hi Laurel,

It could be. I am glad you noticed how to take it properly. I hope it works better for you now.

90 ASHA October 19, 2009

Hi,
How long do you have to take vitex for before your first period comes.

91 Dalene October 19, 2009

Hi Asha,

Every woman’s body is different, no one can say for sure how long it will take for Vitex to work for you. Success with Vitex really depends on consistency, length of time and proper dosage.

All the best,

Dalene

92 Nicole October 21, 2009

I found out that I have pcos some time in January this year and ofcourse, I was devastated. Another barrier. In 2005 I got pregnant but lost it. It was an ectopic pregnancy and I lost my right tube with it as well.
So coupled with the fact that I only have six months in the year to get pregnant (cus i only have one tube) I now had to deal with this pcos thing.
Anyways, my doc put me on clomid, which messed up my cycle and caused me two develop two very large cysts in both ovaries, measuring 5cm and 6cm respectively. They were very painful especially whenever having sex. So the doc gave me bc pills. When I started taking it, my acne disappeared and the cysts started to get small but it was also defeating my immediate purpose. It was also preventing me from getting pregnant. So I did some research to find a herbal alternative and I found vitex. I started taking vitex on the 26th September 2009 @ 400mg-three times per day. I also took a herbal cleanse before I started taking the vitex to help get that bc on of my system. Anyways, not long after I noticed that milk started coming out of my breast. I was a bit worrieed but research revealed that high prolactin levels was the culprit so I continued with the vitex. Seventeen days after starting vitex I went to the doc and discovered that all my cysts have mysteriously disappeared. I was still having the discharge from my breast then but to date it has also stopped. And my period came exactly in 28 days from the last one. I believe in vitex, and am very hopeful. I look foward to having a vitex pregnancy success story. I wish all the ladies here luck.Take care.

93 Dalene October 22, 2009

Hi Nicole,

Thanks for your story of success with Vitex, I hope it helps you achieve the pregnancy you are wanting so badly!

Have you also included a PCOS Diet? A big part of the problem with PCOS is the high insulin resistance. Resistance to insulin increases the bodies insulin levels which effects normal ovulation by preventing the body from ovulating or limiting the maturation process of the released egg. This directly has an affect on your fertility and ability to conceive. Eating a specific PCOS Fertility Diet is one of the best things you can do to improve your chances of becoming pregnant.

The benefits of following a PCOS Diet are:

Increases the rate of spontaneous ovulation.
Significantly improves the environment of the uterus, preparing it for a healthy conception.
Decreases the potential for miscarriage
Prevents PCOS from turning to diabetes

Best Wishes,

Dalene

94 Nicole October 26, 2009

I did some research and I found out that women with pcos should reduce or cut out beef and cheese fom their diet because studies have shown that it causes the cysts to grow. I must say, I find this site very useful as I have read up on the pcos diet from here.
I kinda wish I lived in the U.S because where i live the cost of living is very high. I live in a Caribbean country. Eating healthy is very costly. Anyways thanks for the advice.

95 Dalene October 26, 2009

Hi Nicole,

Thanks for researching more on diets for PCOS. It would be great if you could send in a link to the site where you read about cutting out beef and cheese for PCOS.

Thanks also for your support!

96 Erika November 6, 2009

I have never been regular. My cycles went from 30 days to 100 days with an average of 65 days. Since I am thin, non of my doctors thought I can have PCOS until I saw an RE. After more than a year of BBT charting I realized I do not ovulate. I was put on Metformin and Clomid. I ovulated on this combo and I got pregnant very quickly.
When we started trying again I tried Vitex. I started with 1200mg for 4 weeks then I went down to 800mg for another 4 weeks and finally to 400mg. I ovulated on 800mg but I did not ovulate while I was taking 400mg so I upped my dose again to 800mg and I stayed on that dose until I got pregnant. My cycle length has not changed but I started ovulating every other cycle. I got pregnant but I lost the baby.
We are back in the game again. We tried Metformin and Clomid together but I did not get pregnant. I stayed on Metformin but I would also like to add Vitex. My question is how much Vitex should I take? I have some experience with Vitex, and I know that 400mg was not enough for me, but on 800mg and 1200mg I did have improvements (at that time I was not taking Metformin though).
Also can you tell me how to compare the pill and the liquid extract strength? I have heard the liquid works better so I am going to order some. The suggested amount is 20 drops 3 times a day. Is that equal to 1200mg (pill form)?
My final question is about the fact that Vitex increases the LH. My LH is already very high ~18-19 mIU/ml (fortunately my FSH is good). Is not high LH a problem? Is it safe to take Vitex for me? I do not want to cause more problems than I already have. I asked my doctors. One said it is safe since it is just an herb but he admitted he has never heard about it …. The other said do not to take it since she has never heard about it.
I need your advice!
Thank you.
Erika

97 Dalene November 9, 2009

Hi Erika,

We do not recommend taking any fertility herbs, especially Vitex while on fertility medications. There has not been enough research to say if combining herbs that can effect hormones are safe to take with fertility medications. It is also not a good idea because your doctors have no idea what Vitex is. It is not just an herb, it has real effects. Vitex has the ability to effect key hormones without containing hormones itself. Please read the proper suggested usage below.

Traditional application for use of Vitex

Capsules: 1,000mg a day is the suggested amount to use. Take vitex capsules all month long except during menstruation.

Tincture: Take 10-15 drops of vitex extract, taken 2-3 times a day all month long except during menstruation.

However, unlike powerful hormone drugs, vitex works slowly to normalize the body. Maximum benefits are often achieved after 6-12 cycles with vitex.

It is sometimes easier to use the liquid form so you are taking the general suggested useage, you have more control. The capsules are just as effective though. Traditional application for Vitex is 1000mg a day. You were taking just under or just over that.

Without knowing more about your overall health history and fertility challenges I cannot say whether Vitex is the best choice for you. Because it does increase LH levels while mildly inhibiting FSH, Vitex may not be a good choice for you.

If you wish to continue natural therapies, supplements or herbs you may want to look into a Fertility Consultation or seeing a Naturopathic Doctor or Herbalist in your area.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

98 Chazza November 12, 2009

I have PCOS and have been ttc for the last one year.

May I know if I can take the following to help with my situation?

Vitex
Maca
DIM
EFA
Milk Thistle

I have been taking all of the above morning and night. Please let me know if any of them counteract one another?

Thanks!

99 Dalene November 12, 2009

Hi Chazza,

All of these herbs/supplements may be helpful for PCOS, but they should be used while eating a diet specific for PCOS. A big part of the problem with PCOS is the high insulin resistance. Resistance to insulin increases the bodies insulin levels which effects normal ovulation by preventing the body from ovulating or limiting the maturation process of the released egg. This directly has an affect on your fertility and ability to conceive.

Women who are insulin resistant are also 4-5 times more likely to have a miscarriage. Imbalanced insulin levels due to PCOS make it difficult for the embryo to attach properly to the uterus. Eating a specific PCOS Fertility Diet is one of the best things you can do to improve your chances of becoming pregnant.

Milk Thistle is a great liver herb, it cleanses and tones the liver, but I recommend only taking it for 2 weeks.

Reading over our PCOS Diet page will help you to learn about those supplements that are best for women with PCOS.

Dalene

By looking at my temp. charts, I haven’t had a confirmed ovulation since May 15th of this year so I’ve been using my opk results. But this cycle my temps/opk have conflicting results (opk/cm say cd 16, temps say cd20), not only this but my cycle seems to be longer now. I’m on cd24, I had a temp. increase this morning so I know that my period will not be starting at my usual time, I have a 24 day cycle. Since I haven’t started yet, I know that my LP phase has increased because it was 9 the last 2 cycles. I have been taking a product that contains some vitex (.5% of an 1080mg mixture of vitex, L arginine, green tea) for 4mths, 3x a day. Should I take more vitex? Can you take too much vitex? Following your previous advice, I’ve also been taking maca/royal jelly/and spurillia. I just turned 40 so I’m starting to get a little bit sacred. I really do not want to see an RE if I don’t have to. I’d rather do natural treatments.

101 Dalene November 13, 2009

Hi Maryann,

Taking 1000mg of Vitex a day is the proper dosage. It could be that you are taking to little of a dosage. You can take too much Vitex. Try to adjust your dosage accordingly when combining straight Vitex and the other product you are using. Have you considered adding a fertility microscope when charting? This is a way to see when you are ovulating, when combined with OPK and BBT it can help you to decipher which on may be correct when charting. It is hard for me to answer properly in the comments section of the site because I cannot read previous threads between you and I, if you would like more help please contact me at info@natural-fertility-info.com.

Considering the temendous amount of success with vitex in women sufferring with pcos, I must admit that I can’t help but feel totally optimistic about my chances. As u may recall, I have had an early event of success with vitex under the stipulated time it really takes to work. In less than three months my acne is gone, so are my cysts and prolactin levels are good.
So now that I have missed my period, I can’t help but wonder if this could really be it for me. I am afraid to test because I think I would be less disappointed if I wait it out, than test and get a bfn. Is it possible to get a positive on the day period is expected?
I don’t really have any symptoms other than lower back pain and slight cramps in my boobs now and then. Do women with pcos get symptoms just like other healthy young women. Is there a possibility that the vitex has stopped agreeing with me and has wrecked my cycle? I am just a bit curious, worried yet optimistic right now. Thanks for your help in advance.

I am only one day late. Period was suppose to come on the 17th November 2009.
Is there a chance that the vitex may have affected my cycle negatively? I am just 2 afraid to test. I don’t really have any prominent symptoms other than lower back pain and slight cramps in my boobs now and then. Do women with a history of pcos get symptoms or only in healthy women. Thanks again.

103 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula November 18, 2009

Hi Nicole,

Since your period was supposed to come yesterday I would wait to see if it may still come. I am holding out hope for you! You have a chance of a positive test if you wait 4-5 more days. Low back pain and crampy boobs could also be PMS. I think if you are pregnant the symptoms are pretty much the same for all women. Every woman is different and experiences pregnancy symptoms differently. I had no symptoms with my first child.

Did you take Vitex differently this month, then past months? If you changed something with the dosage there is a chance that it could mess up your cycle. I am happy to hear of the benefits from Vitex you have recieved! Wait a week and let us know what happens!

Try not to worry too much, Best Wishes!

I am 48 years old and have been taking 1000mg of Vitex each day for 3 months but was told to discontinue use prior to having gall bladder surgery two weeks ago. Since going off Vitex I got my period (which was 47 days since my last period) and am suffering severe breast pain due to fibroid breast. I am planning to go back on Vitex after my period stops but was wondering if that will be like “starting all over again?” Have not had much success pinning down ovulation either through ovulation predictor kits OR cervical mucus. The days between periods are just really a wreck!! Could you offer some advice!!

Thank you!
Tina

105 Nicole November 30, 2009

Well this time wasn’t my time . Period was just a day late. Came on the 18th.

106 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula November 30, 2009

Hi Tina,

It may or may not be, I cannot say for sure how your body will react to the Vitex after going off and then back on again. It will probably take some time for it to adjust.

Without knowing more about your lifestyle, fertility goals/challenges and health history it is difficult for me to answer your question. In your case you may want to consider a Natural Fertility Consultation.

hi, i 40 years and i have been trying to conceive for one and a half years. I have taken folic acid 5mg since then and recently i stopped folic acid and i started taking pre natal vitamins (Vega vitamins) since there is folic acid in these vitamins. Can I take Evening Primrose Oil whilst I am taking pre natal vitamins.

110 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula December 15, 2009

Hi Patricia,

Yes you can take Evening Primrose Oil at the same time you are taking Prenatal Vitamins.

General Evening Primrose Dosage is 1500 – 3000 mg once daily. Take
from your period till ovulation, than switch to fish oil. The
dosage for increasing cervical mucous is initially 500mg, three
times a day for a total of 1500mg per day. If you don’t get results
in your first cycle, increase your dosage to 3,000 mg a day in your
next cycle. Evening Primrose Oil can cause uterine contractions in
pregnancy, which is why you should not take it past ovulation (in
case you get pregnant.)

Dalene,

I see that you have been most helpful to other women and want to solicit your expertise! I am 22 and my husband and i have been trying to get pregnant for the past 6 months. Before my first child i had a regular period come like clock work every 21 days, with no problem. I conceived my first son, Cameron in may of 2006 when i was about 19 with no issues, i did however gain 71 lbs and have only lost about 20 since my 6 week check up. After he was born i used the ring for contraception but it was messy and afterward my husband was deployed and I had no reason to use birth control. After his second tour, i decided to try depo prevera as a birth control, and used it for 9 months, Apparently that was the biggest mistake of my life. With the first shot, i had a 7 week period! after the initial shot, things were fine i just has light spotting when it got close to time for my new dose. My husband decided we were ready for another baby in June which was the month my 4th shot was scheduled, so i didn’t go. Since then i have been having irregular periods, with a mix ranging from heavy flow with clot like blood, to spotting. I did some research to find periods like this are a sign of not ovulating. I want to get my body back to the way it was when i got pregnant with my first! Is Vitex a solution for me? If so, do you think it will take long to start working since my problem was product of the Depo? My husband is scheduled to leave in Feburary and we want to be pregnant by then. Please help!

Whitney,

112 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula December 28, 2009

Hi Whitney,

Sorry to hear about your troubles. The first best thing to do would be to learn about a whole food nutrient dense diet like the Natural Fertility Diet. Next learn about the Fertility Cleanse! Birth control contains synthetic hormones which can confuse your body and build up in fat and liver cells. The Fertility Cleanse Kit will help to rid your body of these excess sythetic hormones, it may also help to tone and cleanse your uterus. Birth control has been found to weaken the uterine lining. Some of the herbs in the clense may help to improve the tone again. Be sure to get plenty of exercise as well.

Traditionally Vitex is a great herb for regulating menstruation, but it may take around 6 months to be effective. There is not going to be a quick natural solution if you are looking to get pregnant in the next two months. The Fertility Cleanse kit lasts for one month and then you may want to begin Vitex, but this may not be a good choice for a quick solution. Natural remedies work best over time. Even though natural remedies take months I still think the Fertility Cleanse may be beneficial.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

Just a fairly quick question so as not to repeat yourself.
I chart temps and have done so for over a year. Due to stress and Plan B taken in July, my cycles became messed up to date. My cycles lasted 20 days, then 27, then 32… so they began to regulate in number BUT my temps became extremely erratic and my cervical fluid changed to this day (which is extremely frustrating). What once was normal, tell-tale infertile to fertile mucus is now nothing but creamy all month long and a scant amount of egg white mucus at ovulation. So I’ve started taking Vitex this month and it’s already making a HUGE difference in my temps and I’m suspecting my CM will change too. Now my question is, is it safe to take DIM alongside Vitex? And is there any particular way to take it? I’ve been taking it all month…
Here’s my chart if that is helpful… otherwise thank you so much for all your help!

Hi Desiree,

DIM may be taken all month long. It is safe to use with Vitex.

I am 28 and never had my period regular. All my reports are normal but the only thing is my egg is not fertile. Doctor says normally girls produce 1-2 fertile egg where as in my case they are 10-12 small eggs. I got married before 2 years and We are TTC from last 6 months without a success. I came to know about vitex from internet. I want to start taking vitex. What should be the dose for me? Please help..

116 janine January 5, 2010

hi there

im so glad i found this website. it really answers alot of questions.
although right now im facing alot of problems and i wish someone could help me.
i dont have the money to keep running to a doctor…

i was on the pill for 6 years – triphasal and then i stopped as i have been trying to conceive,
unfortunately my periods became really eratic. at one point i bled for 3 weeks and had to go to a doctor who prescribed the pill to stop it. thereafter my period has been skipping 2 -3 months…
doc put me on provera… it worked for 2 months and thereafter i got 2 periods on the 3month while still on provera.
i read about parsley tea as a natural herb to induce menstruation. it worked …
i got my period 3 days later
i thereafter read about vitex.. i have been taking the natura feminon type…
tincture: 10 drops 3 times daily…
i read on this site that you shouldnt take it while menstruating so i stopped.
but my period hasnt… its over 3 weeks now and im drained and tired…
its a steady flow… kinda heavy… what should i do…
im so depressed by this. im 30 this year and all i want is a baby…

please reply.

thanks
janine

117 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula January 5, 2010

Hi Maggie,

Here is a general dosage for Vitex:

Capsules: 1,000mg a day is the suggested amount to use. Take vitex capsules all month long except during menstruation.

Tincture: Take 10-15 drops of vitex extract, taken 2-3 times a day all month long except during menstruation.

However, unlike powerful hormone drugs, vitex works slowly to normalize the body. Maximum benefits are often achieved after 6-12 cycles with vitex.

Have you read our Increase Egg Health Page?

The first best thing you can do to increase egg health and help to balance hormones is to eat a Natural Fertility Diet and take a good whole food mulitivitamin.

There are the factors you’ll want to focus on when increasing the health of your eggs:

-Blood flow and proper oxygenation

-Hormonal Balance

-Nutritional intake

-Stress

Hi Janine,

I am so sorry to hear of your distress.

Are you taking an iron supplement? I like Floradix Iron + Herbs. You can find it at most health food stores. You may want to look into taking an iron supplement due to the fact you are losing so much blood.

Because I don’t know you personally and know nothing of your lifestyle or health history it is hard to say what herbs would be best for you.

You may want to see a Naturopathic Doctor to help with the bleeding. A Naturopath will go over your entire being; emotional, physical, mental states and will prescribe something natural for you that will benefit your whole body. Remember that Vitex can take up to 6 months to balance hormones, this herb takes consistency and patience. The amount you are taking for Vitex sounds about right, increase your intake by a few drops and see how that works for you.

Do you have cramping? If you do you may want to look into Crampbark. If there is uterine cramping without cervical dilation, cramp bark has been traditionally used to help stop uterine spasm and contractions.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

Hi Dalene

Thanks for your guidance. I need some specific information about the following two brands. I got 1. Nature’s way – Vitex fruit (100 caps) and 2. Nature’s answer – Alcohol free Vitex Berry 1 oz.. Could you please suggest me which one is better for me? Capsules or liquid? Following is the daily dosage recommended on bottles.
vitex liquid – 2 ml (approx. 56 drops) * 3 times
vitex capsules – 1 caps(400mg) * 3 times
Should I follow the dose this or you have some suggestion for the dose for both? and how long I should take them 3 times a day and when to decrease it and by how much amount should I decrease?

Thanks in advance
Maggie

120 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula January 12, 2010

Hi Maggie,

Because I work for this site and Hethir has her own line of products I am loyal to her brand. I am not familiar with those brands and because they are not ours I cannot advise you on them. Please ask the manufacturer of those brands your questions. Two things to look for when purchasing herbal remedies- are they ethically wildcrafted or organic?, and where they are manufactured. You may be able to find out their quality by asking someone in the Wellness department of the store in which you purchased them.

The dose for both sounds high in comparison to our traditional Vitex application. Are the caps blended with anything else? And I am not sure what the dilution of the liquid is to say whether or not 2ml would be accurate for that tincture.

Use your best judgement.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

121 Jeanna January 12, 2010

Hello,
I have always had a very irregular period. It got so bad that i twould only come once or twice a year. I am worried that i wont be able to have children when i am older (im 19). So i started taking Vitex and i finally got my period about a month after i started taking it. But now its been 7 months with no period. Did the Vitex just stop working? Oh, and im talking 2 capsules a day.

Thanks,

Jeanna

122 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula January 13, 2010

Hi Jeanna,

It is hard for me to say whether you are taking the proper amount. Are you following the recommended dose for the product you are taking? Have you been taking the Vitex consistently for those 7 months? Consistency is key with herbal remedies, you can not skip or slack on taking them. I would need more information to answer this question properly. Do you know how many milligrams each cap holds? Where you purchase the product and the product brand is important.

All the best,

Dalene

123 Nicole January 13, 2010

Well I have decided that IVF is the way for me to go, because even though I have seen good results with the vitex and my hormonal problems, it can’t fix the damage to my tubes. I was considering a laparoscopy but it would take longer to get pregnant cause I would need time to heal and there’s still a possibility that I may have another ectopic pregnancy. The IVF is very expensive and me and hussy would have to take a loan to help out but I think this seems to be our only other option.
What i would like to know is what herbs can I take to prepare my womb for IVF and to improve my egg quality?
I am really hoping that i am successful in one shot cus I would not be able to afford another so I figured since herbs has been helping me out with the hormones then it can to ensure success.
Thanks in advance Dalene.

124 Stephanie January 13, 2010

Hi there. I am 19 almost 20 and my periods were not so regular. I was on BC but it made me sick so I decided to go off of it. I have started Vitex about 20 days ago. It has already been a miracle! I just got my period today, it was a 35 day cycle. My pills I get at Vitamin World, and they are 400mg each. The bottle days to take 2 pills 2 times a day which is 1600 mg. is this safe? It is what the directions say. And I seem to be fine. MY breast arent really sore like they are before period and my acne has improved alot!!! Thank goodness! Nothing has seemed to cure it but Vitex! So my question is, is 1600mg a day too much? I ake it along with dandelion root for the bloating, and with vitamin c and fish oil. is this an okay combo and with the milligrams?? thanks!!!!

125 Jeanna January 14, 2010

Thanks for replying,

So to answer your questions:
1 cap = 400 mg. It is recommended to take 1 cap two to three times a day. I have been taking 2 caps in the morning. (the product name is Natures Way and i got it at the Vitamin Shoppe)
And no, i have not been very consistent. After i got my period, i stopped taking it for about three months but then started up again. So now i have been taking it for about 4 months (consistently)…and still no period since that last one about 7 months ago.
Is liquid Vitex better than taking the capsules? Or maybe i need to take more than 2 caps a day?

Thanks again,
Jeanna

126 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula January 14, 2010

Hi Nicole,

Have you read our Prepare for IVF page? Any of the supplements or herbs talked about in this guide should not be taken while you are on any IVF medications. This program should be completed before you begin your medications. Ideally, give yourself 90 days to prepare with these supplements and the fertility diet before beginning your IVF medications or treatments.

To increase IVF success rates naturally, you may want to take a 3 step approach.

Cleanse
Cleansing is the first part of the program, consisting of clearing out the body of toxins, excess hormones, and old tissues.

Nourish
The second part of the program focuses on nourishing the eggs and preparing the uterus for implantation.

Nurture
The final part of the program contains therapies specific for the IVF procedure.

To learn about this 3 step approach click here: Prepare For IVF

Our Increase Egg Health Kit and the our Prepare for IVF Kit contain the same herbs/supplements, but our guides for each are slightly different becuase there a therapies specific for IVF.

127 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula January 14, 2010

Hi Stephanie,

Since the vitex you are taking is not our product I cannot say whether or not that is the proper amount. Stick to what your product recommends.

Vitex is safe to take with Vit.C, fish oil and dandelion root.

I am glad to hear vitex is working for you.

Dalene

128 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula January 14, 2010

Hi Jeanna,

You may not be taking enough. The general traditional application for Vitex is 1000mg a day. The liquid is not better, it is different, but it is sometimes easier to adjust the amount your are taking with drops rather than capsules. The liquid also absorbs quickly because it is in an alcohol extraction.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

Hi,

I visited my doctor, everything is normal
my cycles is regular 27 .. And I will try my luck with vitex
But I do not know how take to Get Pregnant?
only need to take it from the first day of my period till ovulation
or what ??
Thanks

130 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula January 18, 2010

Hi Lele,

If your cycle is normal and your tests came back fine why are you choosing Vitex?

We have found that the traditional application for Vitex works great… 1000mg of a day of Vitex all month long except during menstruation.

131 Sarah January 18, 2010

Hi,

I am considering taking VItex and would love some input. I had a non-copper IUD removed in July 09 and have been trying to conceieve since then. My cycles have been all over the place ranging from 31 days – 47 days. Do other women use Vitex to get regulated after birth control?

Without a regular cycle I feel like we are aiming at a moving target.

Thanks!

132 Sarah January 18, 2010

Hi Dalene Barton,
Well my story is that I have one Adorable baby boy who’s now about a year and 2 months…about three months ago I was pregnant while I was breast feeding my child so once I found out that I was pregnant I didn’t stop breast feeding but I just tried to cut it gradually…anyways the fetus died at about 6wks even though I heard his heart fatal beat at that time when he was at 6wks but I knew he’s dead at about 10wks of pregnancy…so I lost the baby dunno the reasons maybe my weak body(161cm-49kgs) nurturing two inside out……lead to the stop of growth and stop of fatal heartbeat
well the thing is that since then I’ve been so wanting to have a baby sooOo much…so I’ve been looking over the internet researching to get pregnant and avoid miscarriage…

so now I’m using vitex 1500mg a day 2 in the morning and one at night along with vitamin E 400 two pills a day and Folic Acid 800mcg and those two all together in the morning….

so am I overdosing anything there?? I’m on CD10 now, my period is 28….when should I stop taking vitex??? stop it gradually?? or keep taking it?? should I have sex 4days in a row starting from today to conceive>>>I’m looking to conceive with twins…my family does have a history

PLEASE reply me ASAP
Thaanks

133 Sarah January 18, 2010

just forgot to mention that I’m not breast feeding anymore

134 Brooke January 18, 2010

Hey I have hyperprolactinemia. My prolactin levels are high. Which causes me not to menstrate. I ordered Vitex and am very excited to see if it works. is there anything i need to do with these pills to maybe increase the chances of it working? thanks

135 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula January 19, 2010

Hi Sarah,

Many women who are coming off of birth control start with a Fertility Cleanse and then when the cleanse is over begin Vitex. Did your IUD contain hormones? If the answer is yes, the Fertility Cleanse may be helpful with this. The Fertility Cleanse helps to rid your liver and fat cells of excess hormones built up from birth control. Vitex supports hormonal balance in the body by having an effect on the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis (hormonal feedback loop), correcting the problem at the source. Vitex has been found to normalize ovulation.

136 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula January 19, 2010

Hi Sarah,

Vitex has been proven safe to take while breastfeeding, for future reference.

1500mg of Vitex seems like a lot. The traditional application for Vitex is 1000 mg. a day and 1200mg being the highest amount. The RDA for 100% daily allowance for Vit. E is 120mg or 30 IU. You are taking the correct amount of Folic Acid. We have found that taking Vitex all month long except while on your period works well for many women. If you chart your cycle you should know when your best times are to try and conceive. This seems about right for you.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

137 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula January 19, 2010

Hi Brooke,

Consistency is key with Vitex. Make sure you are taking the proper dosage recommended on the product. Be sure to take it every day, try not to skip a day. Make sure you have some on hand so that you don’t run out. Best results are often achieved after 6-12 cycles of use and Vitex may be taken for up to 18 months before your body may need a rest from it.

best wishes,

Dalene

138 Brooke January 19, 2010

So Vitex is not needed for ever? After 18 months you need to stop taking it?

139 anna January 19, 2010

Hi Dalene,
thanks for helping everyone with their issues. have you ever come across anyone whose period got shorter while on Vitex? i just finished my first month and all of a sudden my period is not even three days long. there is hardly any bright red blood, which is unusual for me. is this normal? should i pee on a stick?
thanks so much for your help!
Anna

140 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula January 20, 2010

Hi Brooke,

Vitex can be safely used for up to 18 months. After 18 months you would want to give your body a “break” from it for 2 weeks to one month, then you could begin it again.

All the best,

Dalene

141 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula January 20, 2010

Hi Anna,

I have not had anyone tell me that their actual period was shortened. Why did you choose to vitex to begin with? I am not sure that you need to take a pregnancy test, unless you think you need to.

All the best,

Dalene

142 anna January 20, 2010

hi Dalene,
thanks for your response. i chose vitex because i have low progesteron in the second phase and i also have lots of cysts in my breasts during the second phase and i was hoping it would help even things out. we’re also ttc. so far no changes in breasts but it’s only been a month.

143 Evian January 20, 2010

Hello,
Is it safe or effective to take the following together? I am following the dosing instructions given on the labels.
Vitex
Maca
Dong Quai
Red Raspberry Leaf
I have been taking all of these consistently for the past 3 days, and my period came after not coming for 3months. However it is only spotting for a few hours, and then a few hours later there is no blood. Since this is not a full normal period, just spotting, should I stop taking either of these? And am I taking too many of the same types of things. I do feel a lot heavyness cramping.

144 Evian January 20, 2010

I left out Royal Jelly, I am taking that as well.

145 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula January 21, 2010

Hi Anna,

Thanks for clarifying! Vitex may take up to anywhere from 6- 12 cycles to acheive desired results. Vitex has been shown to improve progesterone levels in the second phase. Let us know in the future how it is working for you. Sounds like you are on the right track.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

146 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula January 21, 2010

Hi Evian,

It is safe to take all of these herbs at the same time. If you think you are on your period and have bleeding now, please stop taking the herbs. If you are not bleeding it is ok. Without knowing more about your fertility challenges, lifestyle, health history, ect. I cannot say whether all of these herbs are the best choice for your situation.

All the Best,

Dalene

147 renee January 21, 2010

Hi Dalene,

This is my first time to use Vitex, I bought 1 bottle in healthy options and 150mg/capsule. My OB found out that I have a PCOS and now I am taking metformin, also my husband and I are TTC for 1 year now. I decided to give my body a break for all fertility medicines and procedures coz I feel so depressed having a negative results. Most of the time I have irregular period so I decided to I switch to herbal medicine, no harm in trying right?. I would like to know if its OK to take Metformin and VItex at the same time?. And since its only 150mg/capsule do i need to take at least 3 capsule/day or more to cure my PCOS?. I am not taking any medication right now, only vitamins such us folic acid, vitamin A. Can I also take a evening primerose too? (metformin + vitex+evening primerose)?.

Hoping for your favorable response.

Thank you so much
Ren

148 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula January 22, 2010

Hi Renee,

We do not recommend taking herbs and Metformin or any fertility medication at the same time. There has not been enough research to show if Vitex will effect Metformin’s performance. It is ok to take Vitex and Evening Primrose Oil at the same time.

Please talk to your doctor about combining herbs and fertility medications.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

149 renee January 22, 2010

Hi Dalene,

Thanks for the info. As for the evening primsore oil may I ask the dosage/daily intake?

150 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula January 25, 2010

Hi Renee,

Traditional application for Evening Primrose Oil is 1500 – 3000 mg once daily. May be taken
from your period till ovulation, than switch to fish oil. The
dosage for increasing cervical mucous is initially 500mg, three
times a day for a total of 1500mg per day. If you don’t get results
in your first cycle, increase your dosage to 3,000 mg a day in your
next cycle. Evening Primrose Oil can cause uterine contractions in
pregnancy, which is why you should not take it past ovulation (in
case you get pregnant.)

Best Wishes,

Dalene
