Natural Fertility Treatments to Avoid Invasive Infertility Treatment and Get Pregnant

Fertility Cleanse Questions Answered

by Hethir Rodriguez, B.S., M.H., C.M.T.

Q: What type of foods should I eat during the Fertility Cleanse?

A: During the Fertility Cleanse it would be a good idea to begin your transition towards a fertility friendly diet. There are many resources on this site that will help you do just this:
The Fertility Diet
The 21 Day Fertility Diet Challenge
What to Eat While Fertility Cleansing
9 Simple Fertility Cleanse Diet Guidelines to Follow…

Q: Is meat ok to eat while on the Fertility Cleanse?

A: One thing that is unique about the Fertility Cleanse is that I created it to be a gentle cleanse that could be easily adapted to your lifestyle. The dietary suggestions while on the cleanse are not typically dramatic as many cleanses are. The focus of the Fertility Cleanse is to help your liver and uterus cleanse themselves and prepare the body for conception. This is a time of building nourishment and a healthy body without having to cut out major food groups. That being said I do think it would be beneficial to cut back on animal proteins to 4oz per serving (especially if you are experiencing endometriosis or PCOS) and make sure they are organic or/and free range/grass fed.

Q: Are there any side effects that I should be aware of while I am on the Fertility Cleanse?

A: I get asked this question quite a bit and have a couple of things to say. The first is to bring to light that the herbs in the Fertility Cleanse are whole herbs, which means they are not isolated or in any way similar to medications. There are some signs of cleansing that may show up such as moodiness from the cleansing effect on the liver and clots or tissues in the menstrual cycle following the cleanse that would come from the cleansing action of the cleanse (this is normal and healthy, you want this stuff to come out). If you follow the Fertility Cleanse instructions and drink plenty of water you should feel really good.

Hi, i am doing the cleanse i am 4 days in to the liver cleanse phase … this morning i woke up with my head cloudy and feeling dizzy and nauseus?
I don’t feel right! Is this normal?

Thanks

2 Hethir Rodriguez August 6, 2009

Yes, some people feel the effects of detoxification while cleansing which may show up as headaches and nausea. Make sure to drink plenty of water and get rest.

3 donna-maree November 30, 2009

Hi Hethir,
Is the Fertility cleanse ok for me to take as I have no Gall bladder,Also I am allergic to bees does it contain anything derived from bees..
Thanks Donna-maree

4 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula December 1, 2009

Hi Donna,

The gallbladder releases stored bile from the liver to digest fatty food, becuase you no longer have a gallbladder your liver produces the bile and releases it directly, with less potency to emulsify the fats in the partially digested food. The Fertility Cleanse Kit contains a liver cleanse. The liver cleanse portion of the cleanse encourages liver health and hormonal balance. You may want to check with your doctor before deciding wheter or not to do a Fertility Cleanse. Make sure you drink plenty of water and get extra rest during this cleanse, you may want to aviod really fatty foods as well. The kit does not contain any bee products.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

hi i have just taken the fertility cleans and now my period is very light and have big clots coming when i go to the toilet, is that normal?

6 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula December 21, 2009

Hi Ingrid,

Yes it is normal to experience clotting. This is your body cleansing itself. Your period may be different than those in the past as your body is adjusting to the cleansing process.

Dalene

9 Jennifer January 18, 2010

Hello,
I am currently on Phase 2 of my fertility cleanse and was wondering if I should already be taking the Pregnancy Prep pills and Maca while on the cleanse or should I wait until my cleanse is over?

Thanks!
Jennifer

10 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula January 19, 2010

Hi Jennifer,

You can begin the Maca, but wait until the cleanse is over to begin the Pregnancy Prep.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

11 Shannon February 2, 2010

I just received my Fertility Cleanse kit and my period has been done for about 4 days can I start the cleanse now or should I wait til my next period to start the cleanse? Thanks for all the awesome information. You have been a blessing:)

Thanks,
Shannon

12 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula February 4, 2010

Hi Shannon,

For timing purposes it would be best to wait until your next cycle. It is best to begin the day after your period ends. You don’t have to wait, but it makes timing hard and you may not be able to complete all of the liver cleanse phase.

Warmly,

Dalene

I’m planning on going through IVF in a few months, maybe in April or May. Is it too soon to start or when is it recommended to beging the cleansing? Currently I’m taking some some teas from Omnilife, don’t know if you’ve heard of them, will this affect the result? Should I stop taking those and take yours?

14 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula February 7, 2010

Hi Yas,

We recommend to begin preparing for IVF at least 3 months before you begin your fertility medications. The life cycle of an egg is 90 days. This is the period of time during the eggs journey when what you eat, drink, ingest, breathe, your stress levels, and the health of your blood flow will all have an effect on the health of that egg. So what you eat today is impacting the egg you will ovulate or have “harvested” three months from now. So for best results prepare 90 days out.

We don’t recommend using any other herbal products during the Fertility Cleanse. I am not familiar with Omnilife.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

15 Diane February 23, 2010

I’m midway through phase 1 of the Fertility Cleanse. Is it possible to ovulate earlier than normal while on the cleanse? I chart my BBT and fertility signs, and its possible I already ovulated. I’m usually day 15-17 for ovulation and this is day 12. Fertility signs were much earlier than normal this cycle. Any help?

16 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula February 23, 2010

Hi Diane,

Each woman’s body is very unique and adjusts to the cleansing process differently. Because your body is working to cleanse and change for the better it may have effected your cycle. The changes to your cycle and hormones are normal.

All the best,

Dalene

17 nathalie March 30, 2010

Hello!
I started the fertility cleansing last week wednesday 3/24. From the post that i read here, women seem to get some type of side effects from the cleaning. I, however, dont seem to be having any. Is that normal? the only thing I noticed is that I seem to be more tired than usual but im not sure if thats from the cleansing or just tired from work. I really want this cleansing to work and im really hoping it is working. Any insight? Thanks in advance. :)

18 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula March 31, 2010

Hi Nathalie,

Every woman’s body is different, some women experience no side effects from the cleansing. Most women who do experience side effects are usually not consuming enough water or getting enough rest. Sounds like you are doing great!

Best Wishes,

Dalene

19 Nathalie April 1, 2010

Thank you for your prompt response. It makes me feel better that its ok that I dont have any symptoms. I just feel like im in a whirlwind. My husband and I want a baby so bad and I feel so helpless right now. I havent had a period since January 28th and its not April 1st :( I truly hope the fertility cleanse helps. Thanks again

20 nathalie April 17, 2010

Hello,
By this wednesda I will have completed 30 days of the fertility cleanse. To this day it had been 79 days since my last period. Should I expect my period to come soon after the cleanse is completed? Medically, i need a period by now because doesnt this put me at a higer risk for cervical cancer? Please advise because i am debating wether to call my obgyn or not. Thanks :)

21 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula April 19, 2010

Hi Nathalie,

Doing the Fertility Cleanse does not gurantee that you will get your period back. The Fertility Cleanse may help to create a foundation for balanced hormonal health. If you have had irregular periods for quite some time it may bee a good idea to see your doctor. Getting a diagnosis from your doctor may help you to make a plan of which direction you need to go to work toward balanced, healthy fertility. Please ask your doctor about Cervical Cancer, this is beyond my scope of practice, I am not a medical doctor. I have never heard that if you have missed your period for more than 79 days that you are more likely to get cervical cancer.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

22 Naji April 22, 2010

Hello,
I was wondering if during the fertility cleanse is it normal to experience swollen breasts and dark/lighten areolas. I am the last phase of my fertility cleanse, still did BD during my ovulation and few days later my breast were swollen. The swelling varies everyday. Just a little bit concerned.

Thank you

23 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula April 23, 2010

Hi Naji,

It sounds like your hormones are shifting and adjusting to the cleansing process. When we cleanse our bodies, excess hormones are dumped into our blood stream to be cleansed out through our skin, urine, ect.

Swollen breasts are also a sign of PMS or pregnancy.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

24 Alisha September 16, 2010

Hi Dianne,

I recently got the lap band surgery done. Almost about a month ago. I currently weigh 340lbs and dignosed with PCOS. i am told not to try for atleast a year and a half. Can you please tell me if this cleanse kit is something i should take? I want to get my periods regular so as soon as that happens, we can start trying.

Please Advice

25 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula September 17, 2010

Hi Alisha,

I am not very familiar with this procedure and my main concern is how big the band is and how much food can pass through it, as part of the cleanse is in capsule form. It would be best to talk to your doctor about cleansing with this procedure and new way of life for you, that way you can make an informed decision on doing herbal cleanses after this procedure. Your doctor should know if it is safe for you to cleanse and how soon that can happen if he/she gives you the go ahead.

26 Kate McCoubrey January 11, 2011

I received my Fertility Cleanse Kit in the mail just the other day and I’m very excited about starting my journey. However, my cycle doesn’t begin for another week and a half. As directed, I’m supposed to start my cleanse then not now, but could I at least drink the Conception tea now, or is that too soon?

27 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula January 13, 2011

Hi Kate,

You could drink the tea now, but then you would not have enough left for the uterine cleanse phase.

Warmly,

Dalene

28 Kate McCoubrey January 14, 2011

Dalene~
Good point :0) No worries. I will gladly wait.
Thanks!

29 Kate P February 7, 2011

I have just completed the fertility cleanse and am now on day 2 of a very light period. The first day was a light pink colour, much lighter than previous cycles, which is good news, but no large clots. I am hoping to do a medicated IUI this cycle, can I continue with the teas in this upcoming cycle and what about the Milk Thistle? TIA.

30 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula February 10, 2011

Hi Kate P,

Do not continue the teas from the Fertility Cleanse or the Milk Thistle during your upcoming cycle if you are using fertility medications. Not all women experience clotting or heavy bleeding after the cleanse, every woman is different and may experience the cleanse differently, this is completely normal.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

31 Amanda March 21, 2011

I am mid way through the Fertility Cleanse and I have noticed that I have been extremely tired throughout this journey. I also have been getting some minor headaches that don’t seem to go away. I normally drink at least 64 ounces of water each day (I have one of those big mugs so I can track my consumption.) One other thing I should mention is that I do not have a colon. I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis and my colon had to be completely removed–that was all 7 years ago. So I have gotten used to change, but man, is it normal to feel this tired while doing the cleanse?

32 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula March 26, 2011

Hi Amanda,

Yes, many women get very fatigued when cleansing, so this is a normal reaction. Headaches are another side effect for some women. Get some extra rest if possible and keep consuming lots of water!

Best Wishes,

Dalene

33 Alicia April 10, 2011

I have a few questions, I have PCOS and I do not get my periods on my own. My husband and I have been trying for a baby for the past 5 ½ years. I came across your website and I am very interested in trying the “Fertility Cleanses” especially after reading all the great feedback!
Is it safe to do the cleanse if I don’t get my period on my own? TIA

Alicia

34 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula April 14, 2011

Hi Alicia,

Many women who do not have regular menstrual cycles use the Fertility Cleanse as a starting point to getting their bleeding time back. The Fertility Cleanse in general is a great way for anyone who is experiencing fertility challenges to create a foundation for hormonal balance and a healthy uterus for implantation. Fertility Cleansing creates a “clean slate” within the body that helps the body to respond and utilize other natural remedies better. With PCOS it is going to be extremely important to learn to eat a little differently.

So if you don’t have a regular period, you would just begin the Fertility Cleanse on any day you choose. Then count the days for each phase as if you did have a regular cycle. Hethir just made a great video on using Progesterone Cream for PCOS. Check it out!

A big part of the problem with PCOS is the high insulin resistance. Resistance to insulin increases the bodies insulin levels which effects normal ovulation by preventing the body from ovulating or limiting the maturation process of the released egg. Women who are insulin resistant are also 4-5 times more likely to have a miscarriage. Imbalanced insulin levels due to PCOS make it difficult for the embryo to attach properly to the uterus. Eating a specific PCOS Fertility Diet is one of the best things you can do to improve your chances of becoming pregnant.

Best Wishes on your Journey!

35 Nicole April 28, 2011

Hi I purchased the cleanse, but my cycle is late, I am on CD39. Do I just go ahead and start the cleans or wait longer?

36 Monica April 30, 2011

Hi, I am fairly new to this website and am in the third phase of the fertility cleanse. I actually just started the third phase yesterday. Is it normal that I just started my period today without any warning whatsoever? I would be about 10 days early.
Thanks,
Monica

37 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula May 2, 2011

Hi Nicole,

If you normally have irregular menstrual cycles it would be fine to begin on any day you choose. Count out the days for each phase of the Fertility Cleanse as if you have a regular cycle. If you begin your period mid-cleanse cycle, stop the products and then begin them again once your bleeding time ends.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

38 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula May 5, 2011

Hi Monica,

Yes, this is completely normal for some women. You would just want to stop the cleansing products and then begin them again once your bleeding time has ended.

All the best,

Dalene

39 Karen May 6, 2011

Hi. I’m 45 and have gone 7 months without a period, and hoping to get pregnant with my second child. I’m currently taking maca, vitex, fish oil, daily vitamin, coQ10, spirulina and royal jelly. I’m also taking a tea for a digestive cleanse. Does the digestive cleanse work as effectively as the fertility cleanse? Am I over doing it with the supplements? And what supplement should I take before during and after if I do the fertility cleanse? Thanks for any help you can offer.
Sincerely,
Karen

40 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula May 14, 2011

Hi Karen,

Do you know why you have not gotten your menstrual cycle? Did you recently have your other child or are you breastfeeding? The Fertility Cleanse Kit is unique, there is not really another cleanse out there that works specifically for fertility. We do not recommend using Vitex along with the Fertility Cleanse Kit. The herb vitex needs to be taken consistently for many months to be effective, so if you have already been taking it for many months it may be best to continue on, even during the Fertility Cleanse, because you would not want to have to start all over with the vitex. All the other supplements have been shown to be safe for use during the Fertilty Cleanse.

It may be a good idea to also speak to your doctor if you do not know why you have missed your cycle for so long. The average age for women to go through menopause is anywhere from 45-50 years of age. Many doctors define menopause as a time when a woman in this age range has not had a period for a year and over. Because of this you may want to consider talking to your doctor about your missed cycles. Herbs cannot reverse menopause, but one supplement has helped to extend fertility in some women. That is L-Arginine. I don’t want to discourage you, just want you to be clear about what may be happening with your body.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

41 Shanell June 4, 2011

Hi,

Since starting phase 2 of the cleanse, I’ve been experiencing a burning sensation in the vaginal area, which I have never felt before. Is it because I’m not drinking enough water?

Thanks.

42 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula June 9, 2011

Hi Shanell,

We have only had one other woman write in about this, and she determined she was wiping too much after drinking a lot of fluids during the cleanse. Are you sure you do not have a yeast infection or bacterial infection? Everyday you will want to consume at least 2 quarts of water, plus the tea. If you have other questions or concerns please contact us at this link: http://www.naturalfertilityshop.com/help_answer.asp?ID=17

I am sorry you are experiencing discomfort, hope you feel better!

I just started my fertility cleanse kit. May I also use the Ovarianwise kit at the same time?

46 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula August 2, 2011

Hi Puneet,

If you are just having some light bleeding then yes, it is fine to begin the Fertility Cleanse Kit.

Hi Puneet,

You are posting comments to our blog. For urgent questions and replies please contact us here: http://natural-fertility-info.com/contact-us

It is best to not begin the Self Fertility Massage or Castor Oil packs until all of the bleeding stops.

48 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula August 3, 2011

Hi Christine,

We do NOT recommend using the OvarianWise Fertility Kit at the same time as the Fertility Cleanse. It is best to begin that kit on the next cycle after the Fertility Cleanse is over.

All the best,

Dalene

49 Bonny August 16, 2011

I have ordered fertility cleanse kit,can I order another kit if I do not get my periods back? Or do I only use one kit?

50 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula August 21, 2011

Hi Bonny,

Fertility Cleansing should only be done 1 to 2 times a year with a 6 month break in between. If you do not get your period back at the end of the Fertility Cleanse do not worry. Fertility Cleansing creates a “clean slate” within the body that helps the body to respond and utilize other natural remedies better. You may need to learn about other natural remedies that support a natural menstrual cycle and regular ovulation after the FC kit is finished. I am nearing the end of phase 3 of the cleanse and I have been experiencing constipation/hard stools since the middle of phase 2. I drink lots of water and try to follow an organic, whole foods diet. Are some father herbs known to cause constipation or irritate ibs?

52 chinenye December 27, 2011

Hi Dalene,
I am 40 and received my fertility cleanse two weeks ago but wants to start using it in the next 4 days when I finish my period. I am wondering I should go aheard since I have not been diagnosed with any problem as doctors say they don’t understand why I have not concieved after three years of trying. My period is regular and I ovulate regularly, however I want to cleanse to improve my chance because I am getting worried now age is no longer on my side. Do you think I should still use the fertility cleanse?

53 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula January 6, 2012

Hi Aarti,

None of the herbs should be constipating, but rather do the opposite. It may be different for IBS though. IBS can be irritated by a variety of triggers, including a reaction to any one of the herbs in the Fertility Cleanse. Every person’s body is different. If you feel these herbs are irritating your IBS, it may be best to stop them. Listen to your body, it will tell you what it needs.

Best Wishes,

Dalene

55 Claire January 12, 2012

Hi,
I have PCOS, and am almost finished the first part of the Fertility Cleanse. I have also adjusted my diet to include 90% raw foods to ensure that I’m making the best effort possible to conceive (after 15months of trying), and I’m drinking lots of water. I’m feeling great, however have been experiencing frequent mild, but noticable niggly pains in my abdomen/ovaries day after day. I’m assuming this is my body reacting to the cleanse and diet change? It feels as though something is going on.. but can’t pinpoint what. All positive I hope! would you say this is normal?

56 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula January 18, 2012

Hi Claire,

Yes, what you are experiencing is normal, many women feel this same thing.

Best Wishes,

Dalene
