Natural Fertility Treatments to Avoid Invasive Infertility Treatment and Get Pregnant

Dong Quai: Uterine Tonic and Fertility Herb….

by Hethir Rodriguez, B.S., M.H., C.M.T.

Dong Quai Fertility HerbDong Quai (Angelica sinensis) is one of the most powerful females tonic and fertility herbs. Dong Quai tonifies and strengthens the uterus by regulating hormonal control, improving uterine tone, and improving the timing of the menstrual cycle.

In traditional Chinese medicine Dong Quai is referred to as a blood tonic as it has a general effect on circulation. This could be helpful for women experiencing pale menstrual flow, absent periods, and weakness after periods (in TCM this is called blood deficient). It has also been shown to improve red blood cell counts. It is traditionally used for situations of stagnation (PCOS, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and fibroids) as it increases the blood flow to the reproductive system reducing congestion and pain.

Dong Quai may be helpful for:

Menstrual irregularities
Delayed or absent menstruation
Short periods with cramping
If you experience cramping and PMS during your period.
Women who have stopped taking birth control pills and need to encourage a regular cycle
Light or slow starting menstruation
Stagnant conditions

How Dong Quai Works

Watch Video: Fertility Herb Dong Quai

Dong Quai works by promoting blood flow to the pelvis where it will stimulate an absent or scanty period. It also nourishes the blood (it is in nearly all Chinese herbal blood-building formulas). Treats iron deficiency and anemia. One of the best uses is it helps women who are not menstruating to invite there menstruation back. The increased circulation also helps to strengthen and balance the uterus. In rat studies it has been show to help build the uterus lining.

Dong Quai also has a relaxing effect on both the uterus and the nervous system. This can be helpful in situations such as PMS and cramping during your period. It’s relaxing effects are just as powerful as well known herbs lavender, chamomile, or valerian root.

When NOT to Use Dong Quai

While Dong Quai is considered safe for most people, there are some instances this herb should not be used.

  • Not for use during menstruation, when trying to conceive, during pregnancy or breastfeeding – Dong quai is best used ahead of time in preparation for trying to conceive. If you are actively trying to conceive and using dong quai within the same cycle, discontinue use of the herb right after ovulation and resume after your menstrual cycle has ended and you know you are not pregnant.
  • Dong quai should not be used by those with diarrhea, hemorrhagic diseases, or excessive menstrual flow.
  • If you are using any anti-coagulant or blood thinning medication such as warfarin or aspirin, consult your health care professional prior to using this product.
  • Discontinue use prior to undergoing surgical procedures.

    Hi Anna,

Yes it is safe to take Dong Quai if you have endometriosis. Dong Quai is traditionally used for situations of stagnation (PCOS, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and fibroids) as it has been shown to increase blood flow to the reproductive system reducing congestion and pain. I’ve been on birth control for 7 years. I’ve stopped taking it 6 months ago and my body has exploded with acne (face, chest, neck and back). I also have extreme dry eye and haven’t been able to wear contacts for more than a year. I track my body temperature and cervical fluid (the fertility awareness method) even though I’m not trying to get pregnant. I’m just trying to figure out what my body is doing now that it’s off the pill. I’ve had a few cycles where I did ovulate (I could tell from my temps, luteal phase and cervical fluid) but I’ve also had extremely long cycles lasting 100+ days with just spotting. My gynecologist was absolutely NO help. I feel completely lost and know I just need to get things regulated again. Would dong quai be okay to try or do I need to do the whole cleanse? ANY help would be greatly appreciated. I’m 26.

8 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula February 7, 2010

    Hi Jennifer,

It is extremely difficult to answer your question without knowing even more about you. Many of our readers know they want to try natural therapies to help boost their fertility but don’t know which ones are best for their personal situation.

If you are someone who has questions about what natural fertility therapies may be right for you the Natural Fertility Consultation is for you.

The herb Vitex has been shown to improve acne and normalize ovulation over time.

I get similar questions all the time from women coming off of birth control. Birth Control often contains synthetic hormones or hormones from mare urine. Our livers have to filter these hormones daily and can become overloaded with them. Fertility Cleansing may help with this hormonal overload. The Fertility Cleanse may also help to cleanse the uterus of old stagnant blood and tissues which are not being naturally cleansed each month due to your lack of menstruation.

Lifestyle and Diet changes are very helpful as well. Eating a whole food Natural Fertility Diet and exercising 30 minutes a day 5 times a week may also greatly improve your fertility.

Hi, I have been trying to concieve for almost one year. It’s been hard because I have not had a period in about 4 months. I feel fine. I was reading about the Don Quai and Vitex. Can they be taken together. Or do you recommend one over the other. Is the fertility cleanse also a good idea? I saw how you start to take if after your period. Any suggestions. Thank you!

10 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula February 19, 2010

    Hi Rose,

Dong Quai and Vitex may be taken at the same time.

The Fertility Cleanse Kit may create a balanced healthy foundation for hormonal balance which is important when it comes to getting your menstrual cycle to normalize.

    hi,
i have not had a period in almost 8 years unless it was brought on by the medicines my doctor gave me or infertiliy. I have PCOS (and it sucks cuz i am only 24). my husband and i have been trying to get pregnant for almost three years with no success. i have tried all the regimens from the doctors and none worked so no i am trying herbs. i am currently taking vitex and red clover daily and licorice root like you would clomid. i was wondering if it is ok to take dong quai with these and if so how much could/should i take and when
    thanks sooo much! :)

14 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula March 2, 2010

    Hi Taryn S.,

Red Clover and Licorice root have been found to increase estrogen. Through our studies we have found that usually PCOS is an estrogen dominant condition and that usually estrogen needs to be decreased and progesterone increased. The most important piece to PCOS is eating a PCOS specific diet due to the fact that women who suffer from PCOS usually have insulin resistance. The PCOS Diet helps to balance insulin ups and downs.

Without knowing more about your health history and lifestyle it is hard to say if Dong Quai would be a good choice for you or not.

Thank you so much for all your help. Oh and also can you take dong quai with green tea? Thanks again,

16 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula March 4, 2010

    Hello,

Me and my husband are trying to conceive the last 3 months and I just started taking Dong Quai. I’ve read online that it is unsafe if your pregnant. I planned on taking it every month up until my period until we get pregnant. My concern is, is it still safe to take from ovulation up to you period?
I’m also taking prenatal vitamins along with dha, selenim, zinc, b6, and fertiltyblend supplement. Are these all ok to take together?

Thanks for any feedback and your help

    hi…
i have a very irregullar menstruation. which product that good for me to regular my menstruation??

19 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula March 9, 2010

    Hi Colleen,

Dong Quai should not be taken during pregnancy, if after you ovulate you suspect you may be pregnant please stop taking it. It is still safe to continue after you ovulate and it is more beneficial with this herb to take it all month long than to start and stop it throughout the month. Use your best judgement.

    hi Dalene,

I have several fibroids inside the muscle layer, inside of my uterus and have had uterusembolisation for that.
My uterus decreased with 35% in three months(it was 14,c5 x 14,5cm). Because we want to get pregnant( I am 38) they were carefull. 1,5 fibroid still get’s blood because the veins are still open.
We are using don quai now, together with L sunteanine and muco care. What do you think of this combination?
Do you have any suggestions to improve my firtillity, and do you think don quai can still help to decrease my fibroids, although I have had embolisation?

My periods are much better, but since i use don quai for about a month now i found black tissue, and lots of black (old) blood.. Is that because of Don quai.?

thanks a lot for your answere we pray for having children..

22 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula March 19, 2010

    Hi Els,

I want to begin by saying that I am not a medical doctor and not very familiar with this procedure. I do have a concern with using Dong Quai while using embolization. Dong Quai has a slight blood thinning property, increases blood flow and may improve red blood cell counts, because of this I am not sure that this herb is a good choice for someone with an embolization. An embolization to uterine fibroids is working toward cutting off blood flow to the fibroids. Please let your doctor know you are taking this herb.

I am not sure about the black blood, please also talk to your doctor about this. I am not familiar with L-sunteanine or muco care. Please contact the manufacturer of those products.

Have you read about our FibroWise Remedy Kit and what natural remedies we find may be best for this condition? If you would like to learn more click here: Uternine Fibroids

    Hi Dalene,

Thx for your quick answere. These products came from an advice from an herbalsist.
She knew about the embolisation, and we would stimulate to clean the uterus and ovaries, and maybe reduce 1 fibroid which’s vain is still open as it wasn’t embolized. The rest of the vains to the fibroids were succesfully closed. So they will never open again.
So i am wondering if any natural product is still able to do anything. I suppose not, for blood circulisation has been cut.,and the natural products wont’t reach any fibroid. What do you think?
My doctor said he doesn’t know anything about herbal treatments. In any case i’ve noticed a lot more black blood, which i assume is a good result of cleaning with donq quai the uterus. Can don quai reach to the ovaries to clean them up as well? In any case i’ve used it for a month, and i’ve stopped using it now, just to be sure.As donq quai balance the hormones as well, i thought it could prevent new fibroids from groing?
Do you think your recomandation will work with my situation, mentioned in “Uterine Fibroids”?

24 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula March 22, 2010

    Hi Els,

Self Fertility Massage, Castor Oil Packs, Zymessence, Progesterone Cream, DIM (to balance progesterone/estrogen) and the Women’s Best Friend may still help. The massage and Castor oil packs will help greatly and is something you can do at home inexpensively. The Zymessence, progesterone, DIM and WBF may help to reduce the ones you have now and may prevent new ones from forming.

26 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula April 22, 2010

    Hi Natalie,

Because I know nothing about your fertility challenges I cannot say if taking all 3 of these herbs is “overdoing it” in your personal situation. These 3 may be combined safely.

Oops apologies, I pressed submit without saying that it’s for Lack of menstration and hormone balancing due to PCOS. Was just wondering if taking all 3 is a bit much, or that it wouldnt do any harm. And that all 3 together would just help my chances in getting my period back, ovulating and then hopefully falling pregnant.

28 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula April 23, 2010

    Hi Natalie,

As I said before, all 3 may be safely combined. Whether they will help you specifically to become pregnant…there is no way for me to know that. Studies show that these 3 may help to get your period back.

    Hi Dalene,
I had a miscarriage in Jan 2010. Have had previous mc’s. Doc says all ok, but the fertilized egg does not find its way to the implantation stage I have decided to go the natural way, and I have seen improvements all round, now know exactly when I ovulate ect……. I think I might be pregnant, very early though.. My question is :- Can I still take vitex, donq quai, also was supposed to start wild yam after ovulation, but put it off for some reason, but now dont know if I must take it or not… I started using Dong Quai , because read that it helps women who have auto-immune diseases(with implantation of embryo).. I have rheumatoid arthritis, which is in remission..My concern is that if I stop Dong Quai, maybe it would have helped with implantation of fertilized egg…???… Please can u help.
    Kind regards
    Lee K

30 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula April 27, 2010

    Hi Lee,

I understand your concern about stopping the Dong Quai due to implantation concerns. This herb may help by increasing circulation, helping to strengthen and balance the uterus in preparation for pregnancy. This herb should not be continued into pregnancy, neither should vitex. These herbs may only be used in prepartion for pregnancy. Having a miscarriage must have been hard for you, have you read our article on working toward preventing Recurrent Miscarriages? Thank you Dalene,
So u suggest I must discontinue the use of Vitex and Dong Quai until I am sure I am pregnant or not?…. I have been on the herbs mentioned now from end of January 2010, just after I had my miscarriage, so its been 3 months now… Is it true that if you r pregnant u cannot do the fertility massage?.. What about the castor oil packs.?… R they also only to prepare the body for pregnany ?… Sorry for all these questions and thank you in advance for your kind response and time.
    Regards
    Lee

32 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula April 29, 2010

    Hi Lee,

Perhaps I misunderstood your question. Dong Quai and Vitex are traditionally used in preparation for pregnancy, but should not be continued into pregnancy. Self Fertility Massage as well as the Castor Oil Packs may only be used in preparation for pregnancy as well.

    hi there,
i was reading your messages-& i have a question….as i am about to start taking these herbs- when you say should be stopped if you are pregnant, sometimes you wouldn’t know you were pregnant until the 6th wk- so if you were taking the herbs up until the 6th wk- can this hurt the fetus? or should you continue until you get a positive pregnancy test?
my question….can taking these herbs during implantation stage & the technical first few weeks of a fetus hurt the fetus?
    thanks!

34 Hethir Rodriguez, MH, CMT May 3, 2010

    Melisa,
Generally herbalists suggest to stop the herbs once you get a positive pregnancy test. It also depends on which herbs you are speaking of. Most herbs are not used during pregnancy only because they have not been tested for safety during pregnancy. A lot of the fertility herbs that are traditionally used are on the milder side and can safely be stopped once a positive pregnancy is discovered.

    35 Natalie Staples May 4, 2010

I would like to know, if one is taking Clomid, what herbs can you take with it to increase your chances? Would these be some of the herbs you can take –
Red Clover, Dong Quai , Macca, Rasberry leaf, Wild Yam and in what quanitites and when?

    Thanks very much.

36 Hethir Rodriguez, MH, CMT May 5, 2010

The only herb that we have seen studies on improving clomid chances is tribulus. You can read more here: http://natural-fertility-info.com/tribulus-fertility.html

We generally do not recommend using hormonal effecting herbs in addition to fertility/hormonal medications as we do not know how they will interact. Tribulus is the only one that has been studied. BUT you may want to use a mind+body approach and try a program like Circle+Bloom along with your meds for great benefits without worry.

    Hi
there I was wondering if taking dong quai gives you real period or a fake period that works like the birth control pills ? also does it make you ovulate because i have pcos

38 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula May 7, 2010

    Hi Christina,

Herbs like Dong Quai works with your body to tonify and strengthen the uterus by regulating hormonal control, improving uterine tone, and improving the timing of the menstrual cycle.

In rat studies it has been show to help build the uterus lining

Because herbs work with your body, not for your body you will not be having a “fake” period. Medications like birth control contain synthetic hormones that go to receptor cites in your body and “trick” it into thinking and functioning a certain way, the way it was designed in a lab to control your menstrual cycle and ovulation.

Dong Quai may help you to ovulate if you have not had a period in long time, by nourishing your blood and because it may regulate hormonal control.

    Hi,

I had a miscarriage in October, only have one fallopean tube, and have had painful cysts on my ovaries recently and feel as though I have had cysts on my ovaries in the past. I am 29 and hoping to concieve, I recently started taking Dong Quai in a supplement form that also includes cramp bark, false unicorn root, and blue cohosh root. I have also started drinking a tea that includes rasb leaf, alfalfa, spearmint, rose petals, chaste tree berry, dandelion leaf, and some others.

I read that the chaste berry could cancel out the dong quai, is this accurate? Any other information you may have would be very welcome, thank you.

    Hi Cece,

In our experience Vitex and Dong Quai compliment eachother. Our Fertilica Vitex combines the two. In fact many of our herbal blends for women combine those two herbs.

The two blends you are taking sound nice. The blend with the cramp bark may be helpful wiht pain you are experiencing, but these may not be helping you reduce or dissolve the cysts. I am not ovulating. Is there a certain herbal supplement that you recommend trying? I tried Clomid for 3 months and then Femara 1 time. Neither one causing me to ovulate. I’ve heard things about Maca and Vitex. And also some teas. What do you suggest? We recently took a break from drs and medicine to see what happens. We have not seen a fertility specialist just yet, if we’re not pregnant by fall we’ve considered it. Thank you.

42 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula May 27, 2010

    Hi Jaci,

Vitex is specific for promoting ovulation and normalizing it. Vitex may take many cycles of use to be effective (6-12). Maca is a nourishing food for the endocrine system, aiding both the pituitary, adrenal, and thyroid glands (all involved in hormonal balance.) Maca helps to stimulate and nourish the pituitary gland, acting as a tonic for the hormone system. When the pituitary gland functions optimally, the entire endocrine system becomes balanced, because the pituitary gland controls the hormone output of the other three glands.

I am totally confused. I would like to try Dong Quai for treatment of uterine fibriods yet the aforementioned text recommends using this herb to ease cramping during your period but then further states that it should not be taken during menstruation. Does anyone know if this herb is okay to take during your period or not?

    See actual text below:

“Dong Quai also has a relaxing effect on both the uterus and the nervous system.

Not for use during menstruation or pregnancy. Dong quai should not be used by those with diarrhea, hemorrhagic diseases, or excessive menstrual flow.”

44 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula July 6, 2010

    Hi Breen,

Thank you for pointing this out, this is confusing and we will edit this page.

If you have a heavy period it is best to not use it during your period. An herb such as crampbark would be better for cramping. If you have cramping and a light flow then Dong Quai would be helpful for cramping and may be used. It increases circulation to the reproductive area, so if the flow is heavy it could cause it to be even heavier.

    Hope this makes more sense.

    Warmly,

    Dalene

    45 MARPSJR July 16, 2010

    Two questions:

    1. Can you take Dong Quai to help people with Diminished Ovarian Reserve and high FSH, as well as a previous miscarriage?

    2. Can you take herbs like Dong Quai, Maca and Vitex in between cycles of taking clomid. I took clomid this month for a mild IVF which has now been cancelled and will take clomid again next month to try again for a mild IVF. Was wondering if in-between taking these herbs may help things.

    Thanks so much.

46 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula July 19, 2010

    Hi MARPSJR,

    1. For diminished ovarian reserve you may want to learn about Self Fertility Massage, Maca, L-Arginine. Vitex increases luteinizing hormone production while mildly inhibiting the release of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). This indirectly boosts progesterone production and chances of achieving and maintaining a successful pregnancy.

You may also want to consider a Natural Fertility Consultation.

    2. Research has shown these herbs are most effective when taken consistently over time. Using them sporadically may not be effective. These herbs should not be use while on fertility medications. Even if you take them between clomid cycles they may not be effective or may confuse your body. It can be stressful for your body to be responding to these herbs and then all of a sudden switching to medications.

    Dalene

    Hi,

I stopped taking contraceptives 14 months ago (took them for 1 year because I was diagnosed with micropolicyctic ovaries and wanted to prepare my body to conceive. Before that I usually had 30 to 50 days cycles. Once in a while I had a longer cycle as well). After stopping contraceptives my cycles went wild and I got my period 3 times in a period of 10 months. I visited the doctor and was diagnosed with PCOS (was never diagnosed with the syndrome before, so I don’t know if I always had it. Never had problems like heavy/painful menstruation, pms, weight problems etc. The only problems I had was irregular cycles and periods of acne. Generally I don’t have any other health problem/issue). The doctor suggested that I take progesterone for 10 days at the end of my (hypothetical) cycle (I have been taking it every 40 days) to provoke menstruation. At the same time I have been charting my cycle temperatures for 4 months and and I noticed that I am not ovulating. My periods were never very heavy (4-5 days of medium flow) but now they seem a bit lighter (2-3 days of medium bleeding and some days of spotting).

I decided to start taking agnus castus in an attempt to naturally regulate my cycle and ovulate in order to conceive. I wanted to ask if you think that dong quai could also help me or should I just take agnus castus? I am thinking of starting to take 1 x 250mg capsule of dong quai 3 times a day. Do you think this could be a good dose for me (I have a small built)? Is there anything else that you could suggest for my case (I think I have given you all my history)?

Thank you in advance for your answer,

    Lily

48 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula July 29, 2010

    Hi Lily,

I am not sure that I quite understand, are you still taking progesterone prescribed by your doctor? Is the progesterone a prescription medication or a natural cream? If you are taking a progesterone medication Vitex nor Dong Quai should not be taken at the same time. While you have given me great information about yourself this website is intended for informational purposes only. There is no way for me to suggest a dosage for you. If you are concerned that even the suggested dosage on the product you purchased may not be quite right for you due to your size, please seek the advice of your local naturopathic doctor or herbalist.

You may also want to consider a Natural Fertility Consultation.

    Hi
On one of your pages it states to use burdock for low progesterone, i have located this in my health store, can you explain why good and if i can take with maca and vitex and also if can take in pregnancy as i am miscarrying due to low progesterone
    thanks

50 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula August 11, 2010

    Hi Kelly,

It would help the liver with detoxification which helps with hormonal metabolism. Burdock may be helpful in cleansing the liver and is usually blended with other herbs like dandelion and peppermint for taste. Hethir is working on the Fertility Herbs page, as information needs to be updated, we feel that Burdock is not the best herb for low progesterone.

    Hi,

I just started taking the Dong Quai Tea yesterday, along with fertile fields teapills. Would this help me get pregnant faster? and is it ok to take both at the same time? We have been trying to get pregnant for 8 months. I also tried acupuncture yesterday. Please let me know, thank you!

    hi,
i am slightly underweight and i have not gotten my period now for about 5 or 6 months. i am trying to gain a little weight, but i dont want to gain much. i just found and was reading about Dong Quai online and am thinking about using it to try to get my period back and with some regularity. i was wondering, though, will i have to take 2 pills three times a day each month, or if i stop after a month or two will i likely still get my period then the months after? i just dont like the idea of having to take so many pills forever just to have my period.
    thank you,
    mallory

53 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula August 19, 2010

    Dear Marianna,

Dong Quai tea is not going to be effective as the whole herb in a capsule or a tincture extraction because Donq Quai is a root. Roots usally need to be double boiled to be able to extract medicinal properties. As for Fertile Fields teapills, this is not our product and I have never heard of it so I cannot comment. The goal of using natural remedies for preparing for conception is to create a balanced healthy body, which may help conception happen, but they are not to get pregnant quicker.

54 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula August 19, 2010

    Dear Mallory,

Great Question. The idea is to help bring your body back into balance using herbs to help your body’s natural processes when appropriate. We do not want to become dependent on them to make our bodies say “have a period”. So it may best to use them consistently for a few months (in general) and the wean off of them to see how our bodies do on their own. Most times they help give our bodies the extra support they need at the time and then our bodies should be able to function properly on their own. With some more complicated cases this may not be true and herbs may be needed long term. It is best to see a Naturopathic Doctor or Herbalist to get an exact dosage that is just right for your body when dealing with complicated issues.

Hi! Ive always had irregular periods even skipping them completly for months. This my period was due in august 14,but it didnt come. I read in a website that taking don quai helps you to get regular in menstruating so i took the pill form, my friend told me that i shoul take 2 pills every 4 hours, so i did. I only took it 3 times. I took it in the evening like at six then at 10 then went to bed and took it like at 10 am. After that my husband tol me what if we are pregnant ? I took a test and it was positive. Im scared of how rg don quai could of harmed my baby can you help me ? What are the risk?

56 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula August 24, 2010

    Dear Paola,

Taking advice from a friend may seem like a good idea at the time, but taking any herb every four hours on a suggestion from a friend is not adviseable. The biggest risk from taking this much Dong Quai while pregnant would be possible miscarriage, but if you are not taking it any more you should be fine. If you are concerned please see your doctor.

Best Wishes and congratulations on your good news!

    Hi tabs,

The first few menstrual cycles after beginning Vitex and/or Dong Quai may be irregular as your body adjusts to hormonal shifting as it is working to normalize itself. These herbs work best used consistently for many months. Stopping and starting them here and there makes it hard to see if they will work for you or not.

    Warmly,

    Hi there…

I have PCOS and came of the pill in April and so far have had 4 anovulatory cycles. I also starting taking 1000mg of Vitex and 650mg of Dong Quai end of April. My gynae wants to give me provera for 10 days to bring on a period and to basically jump start my cycle and then see if they will regulate. Can i still take Vitex whilst i am on the provera?

    Thanks
    Natalie

63 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula September 10, 2010

    Hi Natalie,

Vitex nor Dong Quai should be taken while on medications for fertility including Provera.

    Hi there,

I was just wondering I have just been given some Dong Quai in the root format (stips) the Chinese herbalist has said to boil it. I am taking this as I have been to a gynecologist and the provera hasnt worked eccept once when i first took it. I still get the cramps pms like symptoms etc and are takeing eutroxsig for my underactive thyroid. I was wondering when I boil it am i meant to drink the water that was boiled with the roots? Im new to this an unsure. The Traditional herbalist said to boil it i dont have to eat the herb.
    Thanks in advance

65 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula September 21, 2010

    Hi Megan,

Yes you would boil the root down, this is called a decoction. Follow the directions the herbalist gave as to how much water to root amount. Use a stainless steel or pyrex pot if possible and cover while boiling, reduce to a simmer and boil for 10-20 min or as directed by herbalist. Strain, let cool and drink. If there is extra, store in the refridgerator in a glass jar that is capped tightly. Many people do not have time to do this and do not like the taste, that is why capsules or liquid tincture are used more often.

    All the best,

    66 Nicole October 5, 2010

First of all, thank you. This site is so helpful.

My question is about regulating my cycle after being on the birth control pill for a long time (about a decade). My periods were never regular before starting bcp, most of which I blame on getting really, ridiculously stressed (working on that one!). I just purchased dong quai and would like to know how long I should take it for and how long it takes to be effective. I know these answers will vary widely from person to person but even a rough idea would be helpful.

Second question: to regulate my cycle and prepare myself to start trying to get pregnant, would you recommend combining the dong quai with anything else? (I will see a naturopath but like to do a lot of research on my own too).

    Thank you so much.

67 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula October 9, 2010

    Hi Nicole,

You are correct that it varies from person to person depending on specific fertility issues and needs, but in general this herb is best used for 3-6 months consistently for best results. It may take longer depending on the situation. Fertility Cleansing first before beginning any herbal remedy may be something you want to consider. Fertility Cleansing may help to create a healthy foundation for hormonal balance and uterine health. We also sell a product that is more specific for women coming off of birth control that may be very helful in rebalancing hormones. Fem Rebalance is a unique blend of herbs traditionally used to restore and re-balance a woman’s internal hormonal state. Hormonal balance may need restoring after discontinuing oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy, during stress, weight loss.

Hi, im so glad i found this site. I was just wondering. I came off the pill 3 months ago. I did get my 1st natural period, although it was a week late. I was due my 2nd one 2 weeks ago and still nothing. I started taking mutivitamins and minerals when i stopped the pill and agnus castus 2 capsules per day(even though it says 4). I have been tracking my basal temp and cervical fluid but my temp are up and down and def no fertile mucus. I really want to get pregnant so what should i take. Should i take dong quai aswell.. I have athsma and also take valerian root to help me sleep at night but is it ok to take so many in one day?.. I just want to know what to take to get my cycles back and regulated more.

69 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula October 18, 2010

    Hi Hayley,

Dong Quai has a similar effect as Valerian Rt, so it may be best not to combine them unless you are at home, please do not combine them and then operate machinery or drive your vehicle, they both have relaxing effects and may make you sleepy.

Traditional dosage for use of Vitex:

Capsules: 1,000mg a day is the suggested amount to use. For best results use vitex capsules all month long except during menstruation.

Tincture: Suggested usage is 10-15 drops of vitex extract, 2-3 times a day all month long except during menstruation.

However, unlike powerful hormone drugs, vitex works slowly to normalize the body. Maximum benefits are often achieved after 6-12 cycles with vitex.

It is best to used the suggested amount of this herb as taking too little or too much may mess your cycles up or the herb may be totally ineffective.

It is difficult based on the information you have given me to say what herbs may be best for you, you may want to consider a Natural Fertility Consultation. It sounds like you are on the right track! Fertility Cleansing and Fem Rebalance are other great options when coming off of birth control, they may help balance hormones and cleanse your liver of excess toxins and hormones from the birth control.

i never had regular periods even when i was on bc i would sometimes not have a period, i stopped taking bc late april a coulpe months before my wedding and have not had a cycle since. i have done home ovulation tests and pregnancy test and appear to be having no luck with anything. i went to the dr 3 weeks ago and tests show that everything is normal but the dr still want me to wait and its so furasting i am thinking about trying the dong quai and the vitex, i was just wondering if that would be a safe plan, so maybe i can have a normal system and my husband and i can start our family, im 29 and i cant beleive that i’m haveing issues ttc

71 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula October 22, 2010

    Hi Amy,

Did you doctor test to see if you are ovulating? Vitex and Dong Quai may help to get your cycle to regulate, Vitex promotes ovulation, Dong Quai improves timing of your cycle. You may also want to consider a Natural Fertility Consultation. It is difficult for me to say which direction to go and what to learn more about with what little information you have given me.

Do you eat well, are you taking a prenatal vitamin, do you exercise, did you get your hormone levels tested, what are your cycles like, what fertility issues do you have, ect? These are all questions a consultation intake form can answer for me to guide you in the best direction for your personal challenges.

I had been taking dong quai for over a month to help bring back my period (which had not returned since my daughter was born 3 years ago), and I just found out that I was pregnant! I am very happy but worried about the fact that I took some dong quai during the early weeks of pregnancy. What do you suggest I do at this point? I have stopped taking the herb, obviously. Thank you.

73 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula November 4, 2010

    Hi Mja,

Congratulations on your pregnancy. At this point there is nothing you can do except get some good prenatal care, continue eating well including a prenatal vitamin. You did the right thing by stopping the Dong Quai. If you were taking the recommended dosage you should be fine since you caught it early. In traditional Chinese medicine Dong Quai is often prescribed as a blood tonic to prevent miscarriage, but in traditional Western Herbalism it is contraindicated. This herb is classified in a group that states may be suspected of causing harmful effects in the human fetus, but without causing malformations. This does not mean that Dong Quai has this action, it is more of a precaution. The statment goes on to say, These effects may be reversable.*

I hope this helps. In the future it is best to wean yourself off of any herbs you are taking once you find out you are pregnant, so there is not a sudden spike or drop in hormone levels. If you are actively trying to conceive while using Dong Quai, it is best used after menstruation up to ovulation and not afterward incase of pregnancy.

I dont have my period so am not ovulating, i am planning on using Dong Quai but am not sure when to start and when to stop using it?

75 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula November 15, 2010

    Hi Paulina,

You would begin anytime you would like. After a few months of consistent use you begin to have a period again, you would want to learn how to chart you cycle to see if you are ovulating. If you are ovulating and would like to try and conceive, only use Dong Quai before ovulation.

I would like to know when TTC is it ok to take Vitex , Dong Quai, Maca and Royal Jelly at the same time ?

77 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula November 19, 2010

    Hi Kat,

If you are actively trying to conceive do not use Dong Quai after ovulation. If you find out you are pregnant and wish to continue the Vitex, maca and royal jelly please get the approval of your doctor/midwife. All of these are best used in preparation for pregnancy. If you are pregnant and still using the vitex and Maca you will want to wean yourself off of them over a week’s time.

80 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula December 9, 2010

    Hi Janet,

Herbs work differently than medications, they are effective over time and need to be used consistently to achieve desired goals. One bottle contains around a 16 day supply. In general Dong Quai is best used for 3-6 months of consistent use, so more bottles may need to be purchased.

I just want make sure am right do I take Dong Quai in till my first day of period and then start when my period is gone?

83 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula December 14, 2010

    Hi Paulina,

Dong Quai is best not used during your period. It may be best to use Dong Quai from the day after your period ends until your next period begins. If you are actively trying to conceive do use this herb only from after your period up to ovulation and not after incase of pregnancy, do not use this herb during pregnancy.

    Hi Mika,

Dong Quai and Vitex have been shown to be safely combined. Fish oil is considered a food supplement and is fine to combine with herbs for fertility. Fish oil supplements are best taken with food. Vitex and Dong Quai are best taken alone before eating a lot of food.

I went off of bc in August 2010 and didn’t have a period for months. In November 2010 I was put on a 10 day cycle of progesterone which induced my period on Nov 11th 2010. I didn’t get one in Dec or this month. I started taking dong quai a few days ago. I had a positive ovulation test 2 days ago and had intercourse that night. I also had egg white cervical fluid. My question is, should I continue my dong quai up until I get a positive pregnancy test (I can test on Jan 15th) or stop it now?

    Hello,

Ok so I’ve found your website very helpfull but just have a few questions to make sure I’m understanding it correctly, but ill give u my history first.

I started having periods at the age of 11 and were always on time & regular every month until January 08(was 17 going on 18). From then on I was bleeding nearly every day but very very light til Aug 09. Then in september I thought I was having a normal period but instead I was bleeding so heavy I was having to change tampon every 5-10 minutes & wear a pad at the same time. After having that go on for about 5 days the bleeding stopped completly and was able to see a gyno. I had called drs when everything was happening but they always said they could not see me till I stopped bleeding. In december I seen my gyno & they ran numerous test, got 3 pap smears in the span of 4 months(which all came back normal), received 2 ultrasounds(internal & external, which also were normal, no cysts, all follicals were healthy & ready for conception, everything was perfect).
She started me on provera for 10 days to see if that would induce menstration(which it did), then I was placed on bcp for bout 8 months to regulate cycle(which my period came every month on time & seemed norm) but once taken off pill they no longer came & I’m afraid inorder to have menstration I would have to remain on the pill which means no babies =(

So I would like to know what you feel may best work for me? And if any should be combined?

Also, all 3 docs I seen say I’m in healthy, and everything is functioning the way it should with the exception of this problem & they say the best I can do just give my body time to start menstration on its own again, but I feel there has to be something better then what I received.

I started the dong quai as of today & hoping for the best because me & the fiance would really enjoy kids soon =)

Thank you so much! And I’m glad I’m not the only one out there with this type of problem.

    91 Debra January 10, 2011

    Hi Dalene
I have been on the depo provera shot for 9 years since having my second child have only had 1 period in all this time. I did not go for my shot in August because we would like to have another child. I still have not yet had a period but understand this can take a long time to come out of your system. I stopped drinking and exercise and have started taking dong quai to help encourage my cycle back but with so much to get rid of from my bodyI I am reluctant about putting too much back into it do you think dong quai is ok to take by itself or should I really be using something else to support it ? Thank you.

    92 Iza January 11, 2011

    Hi
How long dose take for Dong Quai to work, I got PCOS and I take 2 x 1000mg a day as thats what box says, the only thing i did notice is that am lossing weight witch is great.
Thank you for any help you can give me

93 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula January 11, 2011

    Hi Sarah,

If you are actively trying to conceive only use Dong Quai from after your period ends up to ovulation and not after incase you are pregnant. So you would want to discontinue using it if you think you may be pregnant.

    All the best,

    Dalene

94 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula January 11, 2011

    Hi jazley,

The first thing that stands out to me is your history of heavy bleeding. Dong Quai is not a good choice for women with heavy menstrual bleeding as it has slight blood thinning effects that may worsen the problem. Vitex may be another herb you would like to learn about. Vitex supports hormonal balance in the body by having an effect on the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis (hormonal feedback loop), correcting the problem at the source.

Vitex is an incredible hormone balancer, which adapts to women’s different needs. Vitex has been shown to normalize heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), relieve amenorrhea (absent menstrual cycle), and decrease polymenorrhea (too frequent periods).

Another herbal supplement you may want to learn about know incase you begin your period and it is heavy is a product called Slow Flow. Slow Flow uses astringent herbs, uterine tonics and nutrients to support normal menstrual flow.*

Slow Flow is an herbal and nutrient formula to promote normal menses, and is to be used on heavy bleeding days. Heavy bleeding is technically defined as having to change protection more than every two hours.

    Hi Debra,

Herbs work with our bodies to normalize the body systems. In your case because you took birth control for so long it may take more support than just Dong Quai to help get your menstrual cycle back. Learning about Fertility Cleansing may be beneficial. When a woman is on birth control her liver becomes overloaded with excess hormones. The cleanse may help to rid your liver of those excess hormones accumulated by birth control use. Also if your uterus has not been working each month by having a menstrual cycle the Fertility Cleanse may stimulate it to cleanse and tone.

Another idea is to learn about the herbal blend Fem Rebalance. Fem Rebalance is a unique blend of herbs traditionally used to restore and re-balance a woman’s internal hormonal state. Hormonal balance may need restoring after discontinuing oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy, during stress, weight loss. It would be best to talk to your doctor about your options. Did he/she talk to you about why your estradiol levels may be low? One way is that your follicles are not responding well to the release of FSH, which may have something to do with egg quaility. Did you also get you LH levels tested? Honestly I don’t have enough information about your particular situation and it may be best for you to work one on one with a specialist in your area. If you are interested in natural remedies for your fertility needs you may want to seek the guidance of a Naturopathic Physician in your area.

While Dong Quai is a wonderful uterine tonic, it is not specific for someone with low estradiol levels. Dong Quai tonifies and strengthens the uterus by regulating hormonal control, improving uterine tone, and improving the timing of the menstrual cycle.

i am 16 and havent had a period for two months and im going to try this and i was wondering if had to take this for the rest of my life or if this was like take it and then when your period starts you stop taking it forever unless you have a issue again or you just take it till your period starts then when your period ends you take it again until your next period and so on and is 16 to young to take this?

102 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula February 1, 2011

    Hi Taylor,

Those are all great questions. To be honest 16 is a bit young to consider taking a dosage that is recommended for a grown woman. It would be best to seek the advice of your local herbalist or Naturopathic Doctor, someone that can do a full work-up on your fertility issues and the prescribe or recommend a proper dosage that is just for you. Teens are still growing and teen hormones are constantly shifting so the dosage may be different. If you are really wanting to use natural remedies for your situation please talk to your parents about your interest and ask them to help you. Having the confidence to talk to you mother about this is important and will help you in the long run. It is best to get on a path to correcting imbalances now rather than waiting.

As to your questions about how long to take herbs for fertility, it really depends on the individual. Herbs work with our bodies to bring about balance and health, once they have done their job you would stop taking them and see how your body does on its own. Sometimes all the body needs is a little support and nourishment through proper diet and exercise to bring about a healthy menstrual cycle.

    Hello,
I am 34, have PCOS and am TTC#1. A year ago I cut out all processed foods, white sugar/flour/rice/HFCS, potato/corn products, caffine and alcohol. I started working out. Since then I have lost a total of over 100 lbs. Before, I had a period with only the help of Provera. With the change in eating/exercise, I started having my period naturally. However, my cycles are very erratic…one month it is 35 days the next 58 days in length. I am not sure if I am ovulating, some months I think that I am. In mid-Sept. I started taking 800 mg of Vitex, 1000 mg Cinnamon, 25 mg of Zinc, BComplex&B12(25mg), 200 mcg of Chromium Picolinate and then 1360 mg of Omega-3 oil.
I was wondering if adding Macca would help in regulating my period/cause ovulation or even Dong Quai (though when I do have my period I am a heavy bleeder and period length is anywhere from 5 to 7 days)?? Am I just not taking enough Vitex or have not been taking it long enough?? Should I bump the Vitex to 1500 mg? Thank you for any and all help!

106 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula February 9, 2011

    Hi Taylor,

I am suggesting you talk to a trained herbalist or Naturopathic Doctor along with your parents about continuing this herb at your age. It is important to see a doctor about why you are not having your period in the first place. Please see someone in your area that you can work one on one with. Because Dong Quai is a Chinese herb you may also want to ask a Chinese Herbalist to guide you.

    Hi Helen.

Vitex general suggested usage is all month long except during your period. Dong Quai suggested usage if you are actively trying to conceive is from after your period ends up to ovulation. Do not take during your period. These herbs have been shown to be most effective when used consistently as directed for many months to help regulate the menstrual cycle.

    All the best,

    Dalene

108 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula February 10, 2011

    Hi Samantha,

Wow! Congratulations on the lifestyle changes and weight loss!

Because you bleed heavily during your period it would be best to avoid Dong Quai as has a slight blood thinning action.

The general suggested usage for Vitex is 1000mg a day. With the highest suggested increase of dosage at 1200mg. a day. More does not equal faster or better results. This herb works slowly over time, 6-12 months and may be used for up to 18 months before giving your body a break to see how it does on its own.

Maca supports and nourishes the endocrine system, aiding in hormone function and production, this plant also is very nutrient dense and aids the body in times of stress and adjustment, including extreme weight loss.

Hi there! I have PCOS. Last year after many doctors and many failures in treatment, I cut all my ties and began holistic self care. It has been amazing and wonderful. I have experienced so many changes, positive changes. I changed to whole and organic foods, which aided in weight loss. Currently I am taking Evening Primrose Oil from menses to Ovulation, Soy Isoflavones and Red Clover in tea form in my early follicular phase, Vitamin D and I also drink Red Raspberry Leaf on occasion, but it’s very hard to find out here and sells quickly. My cycles have shortened, but are still longer than normal. My periods are also shorter and I no longer experience heavy bleeding or clotting. I’d like to take Dong Quai in liquid form, but I don’t know much about it. Also, I no longer take metformin, but my friend here with me, also possibly interested in Dong Quai, does for her PCOS. Would they interact? Both of us have been trying to conceive, myself for four years and she for one year.

Hey there I have a question about this herb. Is there any side effects with this pill? Also can you take this pill with diet pills? I know diet pills arent good for you but I’m only taking them until May so I can get ready for the Military Ball. Thank you again for your help.

    113 Iwona March 25, 2011

hi can i use SEA KELP with vitex and dong quai?

114 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula March 26, 2011

    Hi Nichole,

It may best to avoid using this herb with prescribed diet pills or over the counter diet pills as well. There is just not enough research out there to show how this herb will react with weight loss medications. May is only a month and a half away.

People who are on blood thinning medications or have a scheduled surgery should not use this herb as it has slight blood thinning effects.

    Hi Kimberly,

I apologize for the length in time for me to respond. I am not a medical doctor and had to do a bit of investigation on the action and make-up of Metformin before answering. This page that you commented on pretty much covers the fertility actions of Dong Quai. It is specific for situations of stagnation (PCOS, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and fibroids) as it increases the blood flow to the reproductive system reducing congestion and pain. It also may improve timing of the menstrual cycle. It should not be combined with drugs that thin the blood, antiarrhythmic heart medications, beta-blockers or calcium channel blocking medications. It may be fine to use Dong Quai with Metformin with your doctors approval and monitoring. Both Metformin and Dong Quai have the potential to cause stomach upset, so be sure to not take them at the same exact time and eat really well! Try not to skip any meals, snack throughout the day.

We are going to carry Red Raspberry in our Natural Fertility Shop very soon, so you will be able to purchase it from us. It sounds like with the lifestyle changes you have already made you are experiencing some great results! Good for you-keep up the good work.

119 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula April 6, 2011

    Hi Janine,

Vitex nor Dong Quai are specific for supporting low estrogen levels. These two herbs are more specific for helping women who don’t have regular periods, are not ovulating or have absent period. So I am not sure if these herbs are right for you based on the information you have provided. To learn other ways to support your body when coming off birth control please read our article at this link: http://natural-fertility-info.com/birth-control-fertility.html

Dong Quai increases circulation to the reproductive area of your body, so it may help increase cervical mucous some. To learn the best ways to increase cervical mucous please go to this link: http://natural-fertility-info.com/5-natural-ways-to-increase-your-cervical-mucous.html

Royal Jelly is rich in amino acids (29 to be exact), lipids, sugars, some vitamins, fatty acids and most importantly, proteins. It contains ample levels of iron and calcium. Royal Jelly also contains acetylcholine, which is needed to transmit nerve messages from cell to cell. Regular consumption of high-quality Royal Jelly has been shown to help balance hormones. This makes it beneficial to those individuals that suffer from a hormonal imbalance, as it helps to provide support to the endocrine system. It may also help with problems that are related to hormonal imbalance. A study done in Japan and published in 2007 shows that Royal Jelly has the propensity to mimic human estrogen, which may help those that suffer from low estrogen levels. Estrogen is essential for healthy bone formation and healthy gene expression, and is vital for a healthy menstrual cycle. This study also showed potential for increased size of uterine cells in the rats studied. While there may need to be more studies done to show full potential of Royal Jelly consumption on uterine health this is exciting potential for women with weak uterine muscles or thin uterine lining due to long-term hormonal birth control use.

    Hello,
I have hypothalamic amenorrhea so my estrogen levels are low despite restoring my thyroid using armour supplements. I used to take synthetic thyroid which didnt help, and when I changed to armour, I got a period for the first time in 4 years. But after that one period, I have yet to get another one.
Given that I have low estrogen, would Dong quai be effective in restoring my periods, or would another combination help?
    Thank you in advance

122 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula April 21, 2011

    Hi Ava,

Considering your condition I am not sure that Dong Quai alone is a good fit for you. Based on your information I suggest learning about nourishing foods for the endocrine system such as Maca and Royal Jelly. These help support thyroid, endocrine function and nutritional levels in the body which help support hormonal balance. Royal Jelly in some studies has been found to have a propensity to mimic estrogen in the human body, which may be helpful for those who need estrogen support.

Once nourishment of the systems that control our hormones is complete, adding other herbs like Dong quai, Tribulus or Vitex to support ovulation and a healthy menstrual cycle may be considered as additional support.

    Hello,
In November 2009 i started to take the depo injection, i only had 4 injections, my last injection ran out in August 2010, it has now been a little over 9 months and i have not yet recieved a period back, i occasionally get a tiny bit of spotting but nothing more, i do still get pms symptoms like abdomen pains, headaches and tender breasts but i dont seem to be lucky enough to have my period.

I have just started taking 400mg of agnus castus (two twice a day) but i then came across this herb dong quai, in addition with agnus castus do you think i would be doing enough to get a period back, i am trying to conceive but i have no idea if i am ovulating as my dr wont investigate til the year mark and i am finding it very difficult to track it myself.

Do you suggest anything more than what i have stated? (agnus castus and Dong quai)
Your help is greatly appreciated, Thank you.

I miscarried last November and my cycles have been SUPER long since. I am ovulating; can I take Dong Quai to start my period? And if so, how do I take it? Do I stop taking it when I bleed or continue? I might be super lost about this—I had just ready somewhere that I can take it to speed up my Luteal phase..?

    Hi Kerry,

I think you will find it very beneficial to read our article How to Balance Your Hormones After Birth Control. This article has all the answers to your questions. You are not alone, many women experience this every day, for months on end. This article will help you to understand why your period is taking so long to come back, how the depo provera affects your fertility and what you can do about it. Vitex and Dong Quai are a very good start!

    Hi Nyszah,

I am sorry to hear of your loss! It must be very frustrating to have not gotten a regular cycle back. Dong Quai is NOT know to lengthen the Luteal Phase. It is more specifc for norishing the blood, the uterus and helping to regulate hormonal control. Dong quai is known to help women who have not had a period for some time to get it back. Do not use Dong quai during your bleeding time. You may want to learn more about Fem Rebalance, great for women who have miscarried, gone through failied IVF or HRT. Also Vitex is specific for regulating timing of ovulation.

Yes, one of Dong Quai’s specific actions is to help support getting a healthy menstrual cycle back.

Can you expand on the issue with Don Quai and breastfeeding – is it that it’s not well studied or is it known to be potentiallly harmful for children. I have taken a multivitamin with this root extract in it for 3 days and noticed this ingrediant. I nurse my 11 month old at night. If I have taken it in the morning, is it an issue at night, ? still in breast milk ?. I will be stopping it until I am done breastfeeding but am curious as there is little info on the net.

    Thanks

    130 Mae May 9, 2011

    Hi Dalene,

I’ve been reading your advices in this site and it has also enlightened me. I have PCOS and been TTC for almost a year now. I have taken Dong Quai last month (April 2011) and has continued taking it despite my period which started last May 4. I know this site has specified to discontinue taking Dong Quai during menstruation especially if one heavily bleeds. However, it was a little too late on my part since I took Dong Quai even I have my period. Today, I still have my period but it was different from what I have during my previous periods. Usually my period lasts from 3 to 5 days. Today is my 6th day and yet I still have stains. Then during my previous periods, I usually use 5 pads on my 2nd day. But now, I can barely change a pad for a day. Also along with Dong Quai, I am also taking other supplements with Ji-Lin Ginseng, Red Date, Licorice Root and Lotus Seed. So I want to know, what exactly happens if one took Dong Quai during menstruation?

What do you suggest I do then?

    Thank you.

131 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula May 14, 2011

    Hi Allie,

Great question. You are correct that there is not much information out there about this herb and breastfeeding. It is true that there is little research as to the effects of Dong Quai on an infant through consumption of he/she’s mother’s breast milk. Most herbs are not tested in this way because to be honest the risk and liability are just too high; we want to keep our children as safe as possible. It has been reported by a limited amount of women who were taking Dong Quai while breastfeeding, that their babies developed full body skin rash; this went away after they discontinued use of the Dong Quai. This herb also thins the blood slightly which is a concern for a developing infant. If this herb was in your multivitamin, it is probably at a very low dosage, plus you were only taking it for 3 days; you and your baby should be just fine. If you are concerned you could contact the manufacturer of your multivitamin.

132 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula May 14, 2011

    Hi Mae,

To be honest you should be fine, I would not worry to much about this. Hethir and I have both found that in general it is good for the female body to be given a rest from herbs for fertility (unless specified by your practitioner). That way the body can have a break, a rest to do the hard work of passing blood from the shedding endometrium. Dong Quai works to relax vascular smooth muscle in the uterus. In cases of endometriois or dysmenorrhea where heavy menstrual bleeding is not present it may be safe to use during a woman’s bleeding time. Because it may slightly thin the blood it is best to avoid this herb during the menstrual period of women with heavy menstrual periods.

Were you suggested to take the other herbs while on your period? Please ask your practitioner about the other herbs you are taking as they may have played a role in the difference in your bleeding cycle.

I was wondering if Dong Quai can be taken with Oxybutynin?

    134 Suz May 18, 2011

    Hi there!
Wow what great info on this site; it has really helped me have hope to conceive, after a miscarriage in February and our last try at IVF last month, I just want to get off all meds and try naturally! So I started on Vitex, Dong Quai and Maca three days ago after my period ended and I am now still spotting a bit, was brown the first day and really scant, but now it is red again… I am taking 1000 mg of vitex, 4 capsules 3x/day of Dong Quai (125 mg of Dong Quai 4:1 extract (root) and 250 mg Dong Quai powder (rhizome and root) in each capsule), and 1 tsp of maca each day. What do you think I should do; is spotting at first normal or am I taking too much of one of them? I never had regular periods before, and was on birth control for 10 years before ttc, went through 5 years of fertility treatment and am now for the first time off birth control or fertility meds since I started menstruating at the age of 16.
Thanks for ANY help you might have to give!! :)

135 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula May 23, 2011

    Hi Jane420,

This would be a good question for your doctor. Because Dong Quai promotes circulation it may be of concern. Here at NFI we are not medical doctors and I am not familiar with Oxybutynin. Please talk to your doctor about this.

    Thanks!

136 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula May 23, 2011

    Hi Suz,

Well wow, I am sorry for all that you have gone through, sounds like a whirl wind of emotion and loss! It sounds like maybe your body was not quite ready to stop bleeding. Even though you are spotting, the blood has not turned to bright red, so you may want to stop all the herbs until the bleeding subsides. It seems your body may be confused at what to do when, this is completely normal for someone whose body has been controlled by synthetic hormones for so long. A woman’s body may be in shock and confused on what it should do without all of those fertility medications. I think a great place for you to begin would be by reading over our entire article How to Balance Your Hormones After Birth Control. Many of the same synthetic hormones that are in birth control are used for IVF. We also have great Natural Fertility Consultations.

Hi I’m 27 yrs old, and I have very irregular and painfull periods. Today I went to my dr and he gave me the Dong Quai pill, he told me to take it twice a day. When should I stop taking it if I want to conceive? He previously also gave me the Wild Yam pill, and Yeast Balance. Should I continue to use the Wild Yam? I had a misscariage about 4 yrs ago, but since then with no luck of conceiving.

    Hi Jayline,

It would be best to ask your doctor if you should continue the Wild Yam with the Dong Quai. Since I am not your doctor and you did not say what his plan for your situation is, it really would be best to ask him.

Hi again! Thank you for your reply last time.. Please see above from me. I now am on day 30 of my cycle and have had no sign of ovulation or anything happening as far as cm, bbt, or opks. And I am always ferning on my ovulation microscope… Which means too much estrogen I think? After being through the miscarriage and ivf is this cause for concern or is it too early to tell? I also have read that vitex should be taken only after ovulation and am now mostly concerned that I am taking the supplements wrong and have messed myself up! Should I stay course and give them time to work or what might you suggest? I would love any insight you might have for me! Thanks :0)

140 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula June 16, 2011

    Hi Suz,

These herbs take many months of consistent use to be effective, so to be honest it may be too early to tell. Vitex takes 6-12 months to be effective. Dong Quai 3-6 months. It is our experience that Vitex works best when taken all month long except during the menstrual cycle. But if you are trying to conceive it is best not to take it after ovulation in case of pregnancy. So using it all month long for the first few cycles, and avoiding conception while you get your cycles back on track may be worth considering. Many women experience cycles that seem off, with weird symptoms. This is a sign that your body is adjusting hormonally to the herbs and hopefully is getting back on track. Consistency over time is key with these herbs, if you give up on them now you will never know if they would be effective for you or not.

Hi, I recently purchased dong quai because I am trying to get pregnant. I recently stopped using birth control in January and I have not gotten a period yet. I was on birth control because my menstrual was on for 2 months straight and they thought b.c will help get it in track but now its not coming back on. So I do not know when I should start taking the dong quai. Should I wait til the 1st of July? Can I start now? And how long after I start will my menstrual come back and will it make me fertile? Help I really want to have a baby. When my menstrual was normal it used to come around the 23rd of every month and last about 5 days. That was about a year ago. I don’t know if that information will help.

142 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula June 23, 2011

    Hi Angie F,

Beginning the Dong Quai now and continuing it may help your body to bring back a menstrual cycle. Once the menstrual cycle begins it is best to not take Dong Quai during the female bleeding time.

    All the best,

    Dalene

    Hello:
I have quite the deliemma here. I have regular periods and have never struggled with this as an issue. I was late for my period by just over a week, i then took a pregnancy test and it read negative. From previous herbal research i had read that vit c, black cohosh, and dong quai could actually bring about you period. so i began the regimen. dong quai was not available by itself so i found a capsule that contained dong quai, black cohosh, and sage. I took about 1000mg three to four times daily but noticed i was dizzy and experience a headache so by day three i titrated to nothing. I then began spotting but iit was not heavy very slight. i have done this for about a week and a half now. I went to the doctors and had blood work done and it has come back that i am pregnant. I am curious as to how much harm this will have caused my fetus. Is there anything i can do to reverse possible birth defects?? I am pretty terrified! I am now eight weeks so my exposure to this occured at around the fifth week which i know is a very important week for fetal development. Please let me know
    Thank you

144 Dalene Barton, CH, Doula July 10, 2011

    Hi Bree,

I am going to list what research has shown when these herbs have been use in pregnancy. Though I cannot know for sure, your baby should be fine, you only took this blend for 3 consistent days. Your body told you this was not good for it because you are pregnant. Congratulations!

Dong Quai: This herb should only be used in pregnancy under the qualified care of an expert Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioner. This herb is contraindicated for use during pregnancy because of its anticoagulant and uterotonic effects. This means it slightly thins the blood and stimulates mild uterine contractions; this may lead to miscarriage in some women. This may be why you experienced some spotting. Information regarding feotoxicity, mutagenicity, and teratogenicity is lacking; meaning there is little to no research on how may affect the developing baby. Expert TCM practitioners have used this herb for thousands of years in some cases to actually prevent miscarriage. Effects of this herbs should go away within a few days after discontinuing use.

Black Cohosh: The main concern with this herb would not be for the baby so much, as for how high the dosage of this particular herb in the blend is. Black Cohosh has been used for thousands of years at a lower dosage to prevent miscarriage, and at a higher dosage to bring on labor. It should only be used under the qualified guidance of a herbal practitioner or midwife. It is a uterine stimulant and relaxant at the same time. This may possibly lead to miscarriage, it may be another reason for your spotting. Because Black Cohosh has been used for thousands of years by qualified herbalists and midwives during pregnancy, we have seen that it has not affected the development of the baby in utero. This herb does have estrogenic effects, so long term use in pregnancy, or self prescribing this herb is not recommended.

Sage: This herb is known to cause miscarriage. Sage taken in high doses during pregnancy may cause uterine contractions and cause the body to abort the pregnancy. There is little research to how this herb effect the developing fetus. Of all these herbs sage is a very powerful emmenogogue, that can bring on miscarriage, even at a low dose.

Continue to get good prenatal care and testing done if you are concerned about the health of your baby.

Thank you for sharing your story, I hope that in the future you will seek the guidance of a qualified herbalist or naturopathic physician. Self prescribing herbs without complete research or guidance can be harmful to your health! I hope you go on to have a healthy, happy pregnancy!

    Dear Sholly ades,

Unfortunately we do not ship to Nigeria. Some of our customers from Nigeria have had family or friends purchase products for them and then either take them to Nigeria or ship them directly to Nigeria. Nigerian Customs is very difficult to get herbal supplements through.

If you have regular menstrual cycles I am not sure Dong Quai would be a good choice for you, as it is traditionally used for women who have no cycle or irregular cycles. Have you seen a doctor to determine why you may not be getting pregnant? If you have been trying to conceive for over a year it may be time to get some testing done by a fertility specialist to determine why you are having difficulty. Hi Villian,

Are you breastfeeding your baby? If you are I do not recommend using herbs to get your menstrual cycle back so soon. Vitex and red clover have been shown safe for use during breastfeeding. It would be best to let your body naturally allow your menstrual cycle to begin on its own. This can take many months after giving birth, and sometimes longer if you are breastfeeding.
