Hi there,

I have one last question. Here in Canada we cannot go to a store to buy Natural Progesterone Cream, it must be prescribed by a Medical Practitioner. I was told by a Health Store person that I can use Wild Yam Cream as a substitute for the Progesterone Cream. Is this true?

If not I will order it from you because my Doctor suggests the suppositories and I don't want to use those.

Thank you.

Hi DeborahA,

We sell two different kinds of Progesterone Cream, the Fertilica (our brand) contains other herbs which we find important for hormonal balance. Because I don't know what brand the Wild Yam cream is you speak of nor anything about it, it is difficult for me to say how effective it will be.

Emerita Pro-Gest Cream and Fertilica Progesterone Cream: Our natural progesterone is formulated from a substance found in Mexican wild yams. United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) denotes a recognized standard of purity and strength. It is sometimes referred to as "human-identical" or "bio-identical" progesterone, which differentiates it from synthetic progestins or progestogens. USP classifies the progesterone as the highest quality available.

Fertilica Natural Progesterone cream contains 20mg of USP Progesterone per full pump. The bottle contains approximately 70 pumps.

I hope this helps you make your decision.

Hi Deborah,

Yes, progesterone can not be shipped from USA to Canada, it will most likely be stopped by customs. Plain wild yam cream is different than progesterone cream. You may want to look into an herb such as vitex or maca to help with progesterone levels.

Thansk for the advise.

Last month I found out I had a miscarriage after being 1-2 weeks pregnant. We think it's because my progesterone is low. Straight away after the loss I started taking Vitex, Maca powder, Spirulina, Royal Jelly and Evening Primrose Oil. My doctor told me he wants me to take Progesterone Suppositories after ovulation. I asked him about the cream and he said he'd prefer the suppositories.

My question is...I took a OPK test today and it's positive, my husband and I will TTC. I know I have to stop the Primrose Oil, but what should I do about the rest. I will take the suppositories because if I do conceive I couldn't bare to lose it again. What about the Vitex, Maca, Spirulina and Royal Jelly? Do I continue them after ovulation until confirmed pregnancy or do I have to stop them if I'm taking the progesterone suppositories?

I know you're not medical doctors, but I could really use some advice. I'll do anything to get pregnant and to maintain a healthy pregnancy.

Thanks, DeborahA

p.s would the Vitex, Maca, Spirulina and Royal Jelly raise my progesterone enough that I wouldn't need the suppositories?

Hi Deborah,

It is safe to take Vitex, Maca, Spirulina and Royal Jelly while taking Natural Progesterone.

You would want to take all of these supplements for your entire cycle, except for the Maca and Vitex, stop them during your period.

If you find out you are pregnant you may want to stop the herbs, ask your doctor about continuing the Progesterone and Maca during your first trimester.

Here is what Dr. Wong has to say on maca and pregnancy.

Dr Wong:
“Currently Maca is being used throughout South America to prevent miscarriage and help women carry to term. It also has shown itself to provide a further benefit of increasing the birth weight of children. The average weight of babies born in Denver is lower than of babies born at sea level and Denver is only 5000 feet high. What happens at triple that in the Andes? Nothing, because the Maca increases progesterone production and this adds valuable mass to the child. The higher the birth weight the greater the chance of survival!

If the Progesterone you are using is a medication, please ask your doctor if it will be alright to take herbs for fertility at the same time. We generally don't recommend taking fertility herbs with fertility medications, we don't know how they will react with one another.

Hi Deborah,

I just wanted to pop in and add this -

Is it safe to take vitex during pregnancy?
Aviva Romm states in her wonderful book Botanical Medicine for Women’s Health…

In placebo controlled studies for teratogenicity and mutagenicity were conducted in rats, and even with the animals ere administered 74 times the dosage typically consumed by humans, no toxicity nor aberations in fetal development were seen. While Vitex can be used to help a miscarriage that is acute, it is best to use at least 3 months prior to conception and continued into the first trimester to maintain stable progesterone levels. The Botanical Safety Handbook provided no contraindications to use during pregnancy.

I knew that I had discussed this with Hethir and it was on the site, but it is a little hard to find. So here it is.

Thanks for all of your hlep.

One question I do have about the Progesterone Cream, does every woman need to take the same dose after ovulation to help get pregnant regardless of how low there progesterone is? You have a suggested dose of the cream so is that enough to get and maintain a pregnancy until you can confirm pregnancy and see a doctor about your levels?

Thank you

Hi DeborahA,

The cream has a recommended dose that is safe and effective...too much or too little can cause problems, hormonal imbalance and may prevent ovulation if taken at the wrong time or in the wrong amount.

If you are concerned about your progesterone levels you may want to have your doctor monitor your levels and suggest a dose that is just right for you.

Thanks Dalene.

I've read a few places that adding Vitamin B6 can help with a leuteal phase defect. I know that my progesterone levels are low, so I take progesterone after ovulation to help get pregnant and get my leuteal phase to be longer then 10 days. Will addidng Vitamin B6 help along with the progesterone?
Can I take them together?
I've read to take B6 daily, is there a time during my cycle that I should not take it?

Thank you.
