Best Positions for Conceiving...?

Postby Michelle » Mon Apr 06, 2009

Ok ladies, now I'm sure we've all heard that certain sexual positions are better for conceiving than others. Is there any truth to this? If so, what have you gals heard?

The Truth About Sexual Positions and Getting Pregnant
Which positions are best for making a baby?

Myths abound when it comes to sex, sexual positions, and conception, says Donnica Moore, MD, a women's health expert based in Far Hills, N.J.

"One common misconception is that it's best to have all sex all the time because the greater the number episodes of intercourse, the greater the chance of conception," she says. But that's not true. "When trying to conceive, it's better to have sex every other day around ovulation to give the guy a chance to recharge his sperm count," she says.

While there are no scientific studies regarding the best sexual positions for baby-making, the missionary (man on top) position is typically considered optimal for conception, she says.

"Some people suggest that placing a pillow under the hips and keeping legs raised after sex may enhance the sperms' ability to swim upstream," she adds.

You can, of course, get pregnant having intercourse in almost any position, but there are certain gravity-defying positions such as sitting, standing, or woman on top that may discourage sperm from traveling upstream.

"Also don't do stupid things like douche after you have sex if you are trying to conceive," says Moore. Douching alters the pH balance of the vagina and sperm needs the alkaline-acid levels to be more or less balanced in order to live. In addition, if you douche, you're flushing cervical fluid out and this fluid gives sperm an easier and quicker path to the uterus and beyond.

"There is also a myth that says if you have an orgasm, you are more likely to have a male," she says. "Who knows if that is true, but if you have an orgasm you are more likely to have fun," Moore says. And "when people are trying to get pregnant, it can take the fun and spontaneity out of sex."

Couples who are trying to have a baby should realize that it’s not the frequency of sex that matters, nor is there a secret position that can guarantee magical results. The simple goal is to deposit the semen as near to the cervix as possible.

We hope the following positions will help you achieve better results:

The Missionary: This is a traditional position with the man on top. It’s face-to-face, so there is greater control and intimacy. The missionary position works best to deposit your sperm right at the entrance of your partner’s cervix.

Tip: Placing a pillow under your partner’s hips can increase her chances of getting pregnant. All she has to do is tilt her hips and gravity will take care of the rest: the sperm will automatically slide its way to the cervix if she holds still for around 30 minutes after intercourse.

Hands and knees: This position is commonly called, ‘Doggy Style.’ The name may sound funny but this position will allow for deeper penetration (and according to some connoisseurs, more satisfying orgasms). It involves your partner getting down on her knees (on the bed of course) while you enter her from behind. This position is easier if your partner has a tipped or tilted uterus. It gives the sperm a better way to travel to the cervix.

Spooning: This is a favorite among couples for slow and easy going sex. Imagine spoons lying in a drawer and you’ll get the idea. Lie side by side with your partner and enter as you caress her from behind. Use a pillow under your partner’s hips after ejaculation to keep your sperm close to your partner’s cervix.

What positions won’t help…

•Woman on top: The sperm has just one way to go: up! So it’s going to slide right out once you separate. But you can ask your partner to flip over after ejaculation without separating and place the pillow to elevate her hips; this might help the sperm slide into the cervix.
•Standing: This position may be enjoyable but has the same problem as above.

I have always heard missionary is best and when you are done put a pillow underneath for atleast 30 mins. I have also heard that doggie style is best if your uterus is tilted.

It is so true. With my first pregnancy, the last month I was on Clomid, we did this (missionary and pillow under the hips trick) because my neighbor sweared by it. That was the only thing we did different so it has to work.

Thanks VirtuousWoman and Chloegirlsmama for the tips! I had the pillow under hips thing confused...I thought that was during intercourse not afterwards :P .

I may be a bad person to answer this as I have yet to get pregnant, but I also heard that missionary and the pillow work best. I also wanted to say (although it may sound corny) my hubby and I also do guided imagery after we have sex. But I find it relaxing and it makes us feel closer.
Good luck and have fun!

Hi,

Even as I type what guided imagery is, it sounds corny to me, but it really relaxes me and makes me feel closer to my husband. Here goes: After we have sex, we lay together and imagine the sperm travelling through the cervical mucus and searching for the egg. I sort of narrate the story of the sperm's journey. I describe it's hardships and what it must be like looking for the elusive egg. I describe the egg's beauty and then ultimately how the egg and the sperm finally meet and fertilize. While I tell the story we keep our eyes shut and visualize what I am saying.

Without that relaxation tactic I tend to obsess and think about conception too much.

I don't think any specific position is best. What matters is that you're able to move from that particular position to your back without letting "anything" escape.

Then, from all I've read you're to elevate your pelvis just slightly with a pillow for at least 30 minutes.....If that isn't comfortable you can place your legs on the wall, making a 90 degree angle with your body and your legs, and sit there for 30 minutes. This allows the sperm to pool around the cervix, making it easier for them to find their way.

I want to be careful in describing this as to not offend anyone :D Another trick is for the woman to orgasm right before the man, within seconds. The action of the woman's body will draw/suck in the sperm into the cervix allowing for more to get to where they need to be. Then, of course, lay as directed above.

Hope this helps!
