Progesterone...New Question

Postby sweetface » Sat Nov 28, 2009

After going to an RE, I found out that several of my hormones were off balance.
He put me on progesterone , 200mg everyday of the month except during AF.
I have been reading up and read that progesterone will supress ovulation.
Will this happen if my body isn't making any at all in the first place?
Or does the body need some type of progesterone to go through the process?
Or is it possible that I do ovulate but not as strong as I should?
I don't understand why he would put me on it everyday if I'm ttc and it's making me not ovulate.

I tested with OPK's before to make sure of ovulation, and I def was but I can't remember if
I was on the progesterone that cycle. I am so confused!

Hi Sweetface,

I would ask your doctors these questions. The progesterone he has you on is very different from natural progesterone. Your doctor should be able to tell you why he would have you on it all month long. You do need progesterone to create a regular menstrual cycle. Progesterone is a key hormone for a normal menstrual cycle. After ovulation progesterone production is triggered by Luteinising Hormone (LH) which stimulates the corpus luteum (the remnant egg sac) in the ovary to produce progesterone. One of the main actions of progesterone with fertility is to help support a developing embryo.

If pregnancy occurs, the production of progesterone continues from the corpus luteum continues for about 7 weeks (it is then produced by the placenta for the duration of the pregnancy). If pregnancy did not occur, the period begins 14 days after ovulation. When fertilization does not occur, the corpus luteum disintegrates which causes the level of progesterone to fall and this causes the endometrial tissue to disintegrate and shed as menstruation.

Too much progesterone before ovulation can suppress ovulation. You doctor should know your hormone levels and should put you on medications if need be to support ovulation. Please ask him to explain the entire reasoning for what he is doing and why. I am not a medical doctor and therefore cannot give advice on Progesterone Injections given by a medical doctor. Progesterone Injections are a fertility medication.

Warmly,

Dalene
