Not every woman with PCOS has long cycles. Because doctors don't know exactly what causes PCOS and different women have different symptoms it is hard to say what causes the long cycles, except overall PCOS is caused in general by hormonal imbalance.

Where does all the blood come from? Because your body is not producing the right hormones at the right time it is probably being triggered to create a state of menstruation much of the time. It is extremely important to be taking an iron supplement if this is happening to you. This will help you from becoming anemic. Eating a Nutrient Dense Diet as well as working closely with a good doctor to help you balance your hormones.

Hi pnchamilton,
I also have PCOS and I have had those horribly long periods where I would bleed for weeks, the longest being six weeks. When I finally got in to see a fertility specialist he said it was due to hormonal imbalance. He said I wasn't ovulating. He told me the ovaries tell the uterus when to shed and when to prepare for a baby. So if the hormones aren't balanced then they will tell the uterus to shed it's lining because there is no fertilized egg or it will tell it to line because there is no mature egg to release, thus the odd mix of no periods for months and/or long cycles. It's such a mess. The only way doctors got me to stop bleeding was to put me on birth control, but that is counter productive when trying to conceive! :) These ladies really know what they are talking about and I would recommend checking out the PCOS diet to start with. Good luck!

I also have pCOs and have had those long periods (lasting over a month), until my OBGYN told me that I could have polyps and it was the cause of my long term bleeding. She did a routine pap-smear and found did find polyps.(she removed it right there). I also passed one out during one of my cycles. I had a surgery on my tubes and one more polyp was removed. Since then I haven't bleed for longer than 5 days.
