Miscarriage - Low Progesterone?

Miscarriage - Low Progesterone?

Postby becomingmom » Sun Jun 28, 2009

Hello,

I just had a miscarriage last week.

My DH and I had been eating a nutrient dense diet and taking whole food multivitamins for several months, and I had been taking Maca for about 3 months before we got pregnant. I had bought the fertility cleanse, but got pregnant the month before I was going to do it.

At 4 1/2 weeks I went to my OB because I was bleeding. They tested my progesterone levels and they were 10 point something. They waited about 4 days and tested again. My HCG levels had doubled twice and my progesterone had went up to 11.4 . To me, that indicated that they were trying to rise, but maybe were not able to as quickly as they needed to? A few days later (at about 5 1/2 weeks), I was put on progesterone. I bled continuously from 4 weeks on, and ended up losing the baby at 6 1/2 weeks.

This was my first pregnancy.

Should I push the issue of having my non-pregnant progesterone levels tested before we get pregnant again even though we have not had multiple miscarriages and I am only 29? I have struggled with chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia for years, and I know that many people with those issues have low progesterone. I do not want to lose another baby if there is something that I can do about it now.

I plan on doing the cleanse once my period returns. But, I am willing to consider anything else I could do to make sure this does not happen again.

Any recommendations would be most helpful.

So sorry for your loss.

Yes, getting testing done to find out your progesterone levels can help with the next pregnancy. Your hormones will be out of wack for a couple of months following your miscarriage so you may want to ask when you can get tested. Please read up on saliva testing as Dr. Lee was adamant on that being the best way to have your hormones tested (instead of blood testing). Low progesterone is a common cause of miscarriages. It is also an easy solution if that is the case. Find a doctor that will work with you even though you have had only 1 mc (most wait until 3 since miscarriages are so common)to help you with your testing. You could also work with a Naturopath or Midwife for this testing.

Thank you Hethir,

I actually go to a naturopath, and plan to see her for the testing because I have a longer relationship with her than with my OB and trust her judgment.

Do you have a recommendation of how long I should wait before I get my levels tested?

You should ask the naturopath that you are working with since they will be setting up the test for you.
